Wand of Magic Missile | Kestrel, you pull out some strange looking little wooden stick. [...] She swings it at the Laughing One! Kestrel, a spark of magical energy shoots out of the stick. "Where did you get that, you little thief?!" The Laughing One shouts. Roll 2d4 for damage. After some time, Escatair sets the wand back down. "It shoots a spark of energy. A simple spell." The missile blasts the tentacle, and it twitches, but you just haven't hurt it enough to break its hold on your poor bard friend. The wand turns to dust in your hand. This wand contains magic missile and is activated by pointing it at the target. Kestrel picked it from the Laughing One. She used the last charge on a tentacle monster under the ruined tower. |
Arrows of Distance | "These arrows." He says, picking them up. "They will fire at any target the bowman can see, regardless of distance. They are only limited by the bowman's skills." They went through the water as if it was air, I forgot to mention. Oliver, some of your things burned up in the dragonfire. You lose your rapier, of course, but also the magical arrows, any clothes you weren't wearing, your maps, and your rations. They were found among the hoard of magical items owned by the Laughing One. Kestrel gave them to Oliver, and they saw much use in battle. The arrows were consumed by dragonfire. |
Tunic of Fashion | "The tunic..." He begins, setting down the arrows. "Once you put it on, it will turn into any mundane outfit of clothing you desire." Kestrel hands over the Tunic of Fashion to Oliver. "I thought you might like to hang onto it for now. We may still have use of it in the north." Oliver looks between the tunic and Nikolai. "It seems more like Nikolai's thing, really. Here, Nikolai, with this you can still disguise yourself, to a degree - you can change your clothing, if not your face." Nikolai smiles and puts on the tunic, his outfit changes to one of smilar style, but less worn and aged looking. "Ah! Excellent!" It was found among the hoard of magical items owned by the Laughing One. Kestrel kept it. The party later used it to disguise Ortzi Lantza, the king's brother, and rescue him from an angry mob. Kestrel gave it to Oliver, who gave it to Nikolai. |
Sack of Sorting | The sack has some letters stitched to it -- "L.O." And what a fancy sack, too. "And, finally, the sack... when its contents are poured out all at once, they will arrange themselves into neat little piles organized by value, for every person present." He seems thoughtful for a moment, tapping his chin and then says, "I do however have a magical bag if you'd be willing to trade? If you trust me that it's magic..." You see a few items on display on the counter: [...] and a familiar sack. The sack was found on a slain bandit, one of the Dead Men serving the Laughing One. Norman traded it to Luken in Damerus for a lute, and Luken in turn sold it to Escatair. |
Enchanted Strings | Kestrel can tell that these are strings for some kind of musical instrument. After examining them further you determine that they seem adaptable enough to be used for just about any stringed instrument. Somehow. Norman isn't paying any attention, trying the new strings on his fiddle to see if they fit correctly. They'll fit any instrument, Norman. And they don't appear to need to be tuned. They were found among the hoard of magical items owned by the Laughing One, though it's not clear whether or not these metallic strings are actually magical. Kestrel gave them to Norman. |
Enchanted Incense Sticks | Selene, you're in an old, cheap inn at the south end of Damerus. You're alone in your room. You've lit a set of incense sticks on the floor. The smell of ashes fills the room, and the smoke begins to take shape... [T]he smoke takes the form of Lord Commander Richard Provost. The incense sticks can be lit seemingly as many times as you'd like. What does Escatair tell me about the incense sticks? They have an interesting enchantment, he tells you. If you light them, you'll be able to see and speak with someone far away. These magical incense sticks were used by Selene to contact her superior, Lord Commander Richard Provost, who ordered her to spy on the rest of the PCs for reasons that are still unknown. Kestrel picked them from Selene's corpse. She knows what they do but not whom they contact. |
Moon Tribe Gift | Inside of the chest is a ornate, single bladed axe. The handle is overlaid with silver, and the flat side of the axe head is inlaid with cut gems. "I have had this forged as a gift to the chieftain of the Moon tribe. It will make diplomacy a little easier." This axe was given to the PCs by King Itzal to help them negotiate with the Moon tribe. It is not known whether or not the axe is magical. |
The Laughing One's Spellbook | He comes to the middle of the book and raises an eyebrow. "Oh, hmm. This page is written in someone else's handwriting." He studies it for a few more moments. "A ritual of some kind." "What does it do?" He shrugs. "It's a simple one. It seems to be for contacting someone or something." He hands the book back to Kestrel with the book still open to the page with the ritual. "There, look. It isn't like a spell -- you can read it." Kestrel takes a look at it. What does it say? The ritual directs you to arrange fifty silver coins in a circle. Then you must speak a name, "Miarma," eight times in a row. "Who or what does this summon, Escatair?" "It isn't powerful enough to summon anything. But it is powerful enough that whoever it is meant to contact will hear you." She takes fifty silver coins and arranges them in a circle on the floor. Then she says, "Miarma," eight times in a row. Does anything happen? It takes a moment, and then the coins disappear before your eyes. The message has been sent. Nothing else happens that you can see. Kestrel, while you're asking around, a dark skinned man in a doublet and a small cloak approaches you. "I believe you left this at the inn." He says, holding out a leatherbound book. [...] The book is filled with strange, arcane writing and descriptions for simple rituals. As you read, the man begins to walk away. "Oh, my," she says. "I'm so forgetful. Thank you, sir. Uh -- might I have your name?" The man turns back to you, smiles, and bows. "I am Raun." His voice gets lower. "A pleasure doing business. If you require me in the future, you need only pay the fee." Kestrel, the text is surprisingly readable for magic bullshit, but you'll need some serious concentration to learn anything from it. Some of the pages have prices listed in silver coins. It's like a magical catalogue or something. That's all you gather. Kestrel gives Nikolai a pocket-sized book with arcane scribblings in it. There are some pages torn out of it. "You seem to know a bit of magic," she says. "I took this from a sorcerer-thief, the Laughing One, as a prize. Long ago. Not too long after we first set foot on this island." Nikolai frowns. "It is...a natural progression of my kind. We grow stronger, and dark powers awaken within us. Our dark blood fills us with knowledge and abilities, perhaps from our sires, or perhaps from an even darker place..." He takes the book. "But, I am sure this will come in handy. I am not as skilled in fighting in the front as you are." While spellbooks in Irla are not generally notable or expensive given how commonplace magic is, the Laughing One's spellbook contained this unusual ritual. Miarma appears to be a shadowy being who grants her followers magical powers. Kestrel tore out the pages containing Miarma's ritual and gave the spellbook to Nikolai for his use. |
Imp Box | You see a few items on display on the counter: a small, curious wooden box [...] He scratches his chin, trying to remember the box. "Oh, that thing. It's not the box so much as what's in it. It's filled with tiny little imps -- some mage in ragged old robes came by my shop with it, claiming you could ask them to perform tricks or little tasks for you. They mostly just throw shit everywhere." Kestrel saw this box for sale in Escatair's shop. |
Horn of Smoke | You see a few items on display on the counter: [...] a hunting horn [...] "The hunting horn is a curious thing -- you blow into it, and it comes out the other end as smoke. Enough to fill a room." Kestrel saw this horn for sale in Escatair's shop. |
Soulstealer | You see two objects in here: A shortsword made of dark grey metal that glints a fell red in the magical light, [...] Kestrel found this shortsword in a ruined tower near the Moon tribe. She dropped the sword in a tunnel when one of the creatures invaded her mind, and a cave-in prevented her from retrieving it. When you take an intelligent being's life with this sword, hold 1. The hold can never go above 1. You can spend the hold at any time to invoke one of the sword's powers:
|
Skull of the Scholar | You see two objects in here: [...] a completely black human skull. Kestrel tells the Skull of the Scholar, "Tell me about magic." The skull clicks its teeth together. It knows lots about magic. Kestrel found this skull in a ruined tower near the Moon tribe and kept it for herself. Before you sleep, you may ask this skull to tell you of its knowledge in any particular subject. As you rest, the skull will whisper to you in its language. When you wake up, take +1 forward to any rolls related to the subject you asked it about. Whenever the skull whispers to you, you lose the last forward bonus it granted you if you did not use it. |
Lullaby Flute | Kestrel, the skeletons looked like they were armed in life, but something has eaten away most of their equipment. Escatair kneels by the skeletons with you. He moves a hand over them. Is there nothing left at all? Kestrel searches the remains carefully, lifting away the rotted armor. You and Escatair both find, at the same time, some curious wooden thing underneath one of them. You pull it out. It's a flute! Escatair explains that the flute has an enchantment that will put one's foes to sleep. This flute was found in the underground lair of a stone eater. Norman took it. |
Net of Constriction | Escatair gives you a nod, Kestrel, when he picks up the flute. "This, and..." He points at what looks like a bundle of cloth next to the other body. "That thing, whatever it is." Kestrel picks up the bundle of cloth and unwraps it. It's actually a net! Strange. It's not in terribly good condition by now, of course. Kestrel throws the Net of Constriction at Markas! The net wraps around his tightly, and he falls over. "Ah!" Markas conjures forth another spear of lightning, and swings it around himself, breaking free of the net. This net was found in the underground lair of a stone eater. Kestrel threw it at the mad knight, Markas, to delay him so that she could kill him but was foiled by a spear of lightning. The net was destroyed by another spear. The net, when thrown at someone who is about the size of a human or smaller, will come alive and constrict them, keeping them trapped. It only loosens when the target breaks out, or the thrower pulls it away. |
Escatair's Wands | The man behind the counter also shows you a few wands. These might not even necessarily be legal, but he knows you're a friend of Escatair's. There's a Wand of Explosions, a Wand of Ghost Sound, and a Wand of Shrinking. He scratches his head. "Well, we haven't had time to test it. But the seller seemed very trustworthy, for what it's worth." He tells you to stand back, heads to the edge of the room, and points the wand at the other wall. There is a sudden explosion where he points. It makes a terribly loud noise and knocks over (and nearly destroys) a few of the closer barrels and crates. There doesn't seem to be any fire involved, you see -- it's just pure explosion. The wand of explosions generates explosive force without fire and allegedly had ten charges before Unai tested it. It is unknown what the other two wands do, though presumably they are just as accurately-named as the first. Unbeknownst to Escatair or Kestrel, the wand of explosions has a 50% chance of affecting the user each time it is used and is therefore extremely dangerous. The other two wands are probably also faulty (but this is speculation). |
Mithralan's Songbook | Escatair shows you the cover page, Oliver. 'Mithralan's Songbook' is written there in an elegant handwriting. "There are a bunch of songs written down, here, but I think they might really be incantations for spells!" You think you can use the songs to apply magical effects to your shouts, Norman! Of course, you have no idea what magical effect that will be, right now. This book came from Markas' hoard in Raindura. Escatair gave it to Norman. |
Sword of Leadership | Escatair found several magical items in the inner keep, and Kestrel decided to search Markas' belongings for anything notable. There's a straight sword [...] weighing 1. Unai nods, and digs around in the back. He pulls out a flask. "Potion of Shapeshifting. Combine it with the blood of any creature, animal or man or anything, and drink it to become one!... for a day or so." Nikolai nods. "Well, that Potion of Shapeshifting does sound like it would be useful. Very well, I will trade this sword for it, then!" He clasps his hands together. A sword recovered from Markas' hoard in Raindura. Nikolai traded it to Unai in Damerus for a Potion of Shapeshifting. In battle, this sword begins to glow with a golden light, granting +1 Loyalty to hirelings. |
Lucky Coin | Escatair found several magical items in the inner keep, and Kestrel decided to search Markas' belongings for anything notable. [...] There's also a silver coin which weighs 0. Kestrel holds out the stake, walking forward toward Ilun, grunting as she tries to endure and push through the force of his magic. Sticking the dagger in her belt, she slips a silver coin from her pocket and flips it. Sometimes, as a Thief, you have to make your own luck. You flip the coin, and through extraordinary luck, you manage to avoid being pushed back by Ilun's powers. The coin disappears. You touch the elder vampire. A coin recovered from Markas' hoard in Raindura. Kestrel kept it and later used it to evade one of Ilun's spells; the coin disappeared afterwards. A shiny silver coin emblazoned with a woman's face on either side, and enchanted with divine magic. When you flip the coin, the next time you would roll, consider it an immediate success. When the coin lands, it disappears, to be uncovered again by another lucky individual. |
Pouch of Ashes | Oliver looks over the items, and thinks for a moment. "The ashes. I've seen people hurt without being able to help them too many times." Broose, about how many people could the ashes heal? Is there a number of uses? One use, baby. But it'll heal everything, Oliver. Maybe even a lost limb. Maybe we could use them to make something else. It does say they're a rare alchemical substance. Did Escatair say this? In which case, Oliver might inquire about what alchemical concoctions they might be used in. Good question. What do you think? It can be used to make 5 healing potions which remove all debilities and restore full health. But which don't restore lost limbs, etc. And it requires... some ingredient only found in The Shade. Yes, Escatair tells you that alchemists could make a powerful panacea with these ashes in the past, but the recipe has been lost to time. All that is known is that the other ingredient came from The Shade. This pouch of ashes was taken from a dead lizardfolk spellcaster. Oliver took them. The ashes of some mythical creature, and a very rare alchemical substance. Sprinkle the ashes on any wound, and it will be healed immediately and completely. |
Woolen Cloak | Broose: What does the woollen cloak look like? It's a grey, dusty old cloak, but it's big and warm. Escatair knows it to be enchanted. Does it have a hood? Honestly, that was all I wanted to know. Sure, it has a hood. A cloak recovered from Markas' hoard in Raindura. Grimalkin took it, but Kestrel stole it from her. An old, warm cloak enchanted with divine magic. Any items you wrap the cloak around are completely weightless, and won't count towards your load. |
Mail of Defense | It's a simple, steel chainmail shirt. It won't restrict your movement too much. This mail shirt came from Markas' hoard in Raindura. Nikolai kept it. This simple steel mail shirt is imbued with defensive enchantments. While you wear it, you gain 2 hold on a partially successful Defend move, and 1 hold on a failure (in addition to whatever the GM says.) But beware: if you retreat from defense before spending your hold, the armor will break apart violently. |
Scroll of Paralyzation | And then the scroll. Kestrel tells Escatair that he may as well keep it. Escatair is fine with that! A scroll taken from Markas' hoard in Raindura. Kestrel let Escatair keep it. |
Teleportation Chalk | Oliver, you open the box and... There's a piece of chalk resting inside! He [Alharis] holds it in his hand for a few moments, poking his nose out to give it a sniff. "No trickery? How noble of you. Here, take it. It is but a trinket!" He hands it back to you, and then his arm retreats back into the mirror. He walks out of the mirror behind you, in the flesh. "I give it to you as a gift. And you will return the favor by telling me the story of how you found it!" Kestrel nods. "Very well. Ah -- that reminds me. I think you should carry this instead of me." Kestrel gives Oliver the chalk and explains the finer details of how it works: the word can be used more than once, but it only works for whomever is carrying it (and anyone they touch). The chalk was buried behind the tavern at a fishing village called Itsa. Markas stole it and was planning to use it in his mad plots. Alharis, a powerful mage, created it and gave it to the party as a gift. The party has used it several times to escape dangerous situations. The word can be used more than once. Kestrel held the chalk for a while before turning it over to Oliver. Write a word into a hard surface with this chalk, and the next time you speak it, you and any allies you are touching will be transported to the location of the writing. If the writing is erased or damaged, it will fail. Only one written word can be maintained at once. |
Alharis' Scroll | "You may return with the chalk, or I can send you somewhere else, if you'd like." He says. He snaps his fingers, and a small, rolled up scroll appears in his hand. "Use this to return here, if you need to! But it will only work once." He hands the scroll over. A scroll given to the party by Alharis. Kestrel kept it. |
Potion of Shapeshifting | Unai nods, and digs around in the back. Nikolai opens the potion, and quickly uses a finger to scrape the blood into the potion. He closes the stopper, gives the potion a bit of a shake, before reopening it and downing the contents. As you swallow the last of the potion, Nikolai, you feel your form changing. [...] You look almost exactly like the old Tasuna Otzi, Nikolai! A potion that Nikolai obtained by selling the Sword of Leadership to Unai. He used it later to great effect by transforming himself into Tasuna Otzi, one of the district mages in Damerus, and using the mage's influence to help the party. |
Ivy Crown | You pop out next to the group, Grimalkin. You feel yourself drawn to the ivy crown sitting in the sack Kestrel's showing off. When you wear this crown, any unintelligent animal who you have the ability to shapeshift into will treat you as an ally, and obey your commands. Grimalkin, the spirits in the crown tell you that they serve you, so long as you remain a warrior of nature. Keep on fighting for the forest, they tell you, but also the plains and the mountains and the seas, in these strange lands you find yourself in. Grimalkin seems offput by something. 'City?' she asks the crown. Yes, Grimalkin, child. There is nature in the cities as well. In the beasts of burden and the rats and dogs. You must protect them too. A magical item taken from Siarme's hoard. Grimalkin took it. |
Honjou Yuzuki's Masamune Blade | Kestrel, you didn't have time to notice it before, but the sword is of the Jiyuuteri style. Very well-crafted, as well. No, it's a sick nasty katana, motherfucker. And it's hella light. Even a little bit...... precise. Are there any words written on it? Is that what they do in Jiyuuteri? Write shit on their swords? Yes, some sword-smiths sign their swords, and some blades are magical. Or so the legends say. Hmm, yes, this is a very fine sword, so it stands to reason that a famous swordsmith's name is inscribed on it. What name is that? Masamune, of course. Okay, Kestrel, let me tell you the story of this sword... Many know the old tale of how Dorn ascended to godhood: in life, he was a great warrior who stopped the orcish invasion of the mainland, thousands of years ago. However, in Jiyuuteri, the story is told much differently -- there, the legend is of the warrior Honjou Yuzuki. It is said that when the orcs reached the east, she took up her sword, forged by Masamune, and challenged the warchief to a duel. The orcs laughed, and captured her, and that night she took her own life with the blade, having failed at her quest. The story is less clear here -- nobody has agreed on what it was, but some force brought her back from death, and in the night, she slew the warchief and all of his lieutenants as they slept in the war camp. The orcish horde, without any leadership, was forced to return home to choose a new leader, and Honjou Yuzuki was praised as a hero. Kestrel, from consulting the book, you have determined that this was her sword. You know from the stories that it was certainly magical in Yuzuki's day, but none have been able to tap into its power since. It's too late, Kestrel. You are in his [Ilun's] control. You stop completely. He takes a few steps back, clutching his wounds, and laughs! "Kill yourself." He says. You bring the Honjou Masamune to your throat and cut deeply. The darkness takes you, Kestrel, and you find yourself at Aladine's Black Gates. You see Sendoa, and Esti, men of the militia from Badian, all on the other side. But someone is here with you. It's a Jiyuuterian woman in old fashioned, crimson robes. Kestrel looks over the crowd, then, seeing the woman from her homeland, she bows deeply and wordlessly. "You have walked in my path, Kestrel," the woman says. "You have accomplished great deeds. And you may accomplish many more." She looks over to the gates. "I will save you from this place of great darkness, under one condition... Absorb my way of life. Live on for me, and destroy the evil that threatens the world. Discipline yourself as a warrior. That is the path I would set you on. Walk it, or I will abandon you to the darkness." Kestrel thinks for a moment. "Steel is strong, but magic is so much stronger. What am I to do?" "There is a magic inside every being. One that sorcerors know nothing of. Master yourself, and you will master it." Kestrel bows her head. "I will learn your way of life." You feel yourself being pulled back, Kestrel. You're back in the common room. You're holding the Honjou Masamune. It's crackling with lightning. A magical sword taken from Siarme's hoard. Kestrel kept it and tried to unlock its secrets with little success. In a fight with the ancient vampire, Ilun, Kestrel was mesmerized and forced to use the sword to slit her own throat. Honjou Yuzuki brought Kestrel back to life with the promise that she follow the path of a warrior. The sword's powers revealed themselves afterwards. This blade crackles with lightning. Against any creature especially vulnerable to lightning, its damage ignores armor. Whenever you end a fight without spilling a drop of your own blood, hold 1. You may never have more than 1 hold. You may spend the hold at any time to summon a brief thunderstorm at your location. Whenever there's a flash of lightning visible to you, you may instantly move to any location in near range. In addition, you may choose to deal stun damage whenever you attack with this blade. |
Rare, Unknown Poison | You know that this is a rare kind of poison, Kestrel, but you can't discern its exact effects. Okay, Kestrel. You discern a bit more about the poison: it doesn't kill. Instead, it incapacitates the victim in a different way. ... Kestrel takes out her jar of rare poison, poisons an arrow, and fires it into the brain. Your arrow goes wide, Kestrel, and plants itself in the wall on the other side of the chamber. Tens of flayed men burst from the walls! A jar of rare poison taken from Siarme's hoard. Kestrel was unable to determine precisely what it did. The poison was wasted in a moment of desperation against the brain of the enormous underground guardian near Amai's ruined tower. |
Pouch of Stargaza | And the third -- several tiny, brittle, multicolored crystals. He sits down at the table, opening up the pouch and taking out one of the tiny crystals. He frowns and gives it a little sniff. "Ah, er..." He looks to you, Oliver. "Sir, this is, I believe, Stargaza." Stargaza is "a powerful drug formed from the salt of Ororkonasa" from Eldasharkai, I recall. Does Oliver know about it, I wonder? What are its effects supposed to be? Oliver, you know that Stargaza is a powerful drug formed from the salt of Ororkonasa. It's sold to black market merchants at the Grey Gate, mostly, and from there it goes all over the continent. Being from Eldasharkai, one one would it makes you kill everyone, or something, but since it's apparently in demand elsewhere, maybe it does something else. Is Stargaza illegal in Damerus, firstly? No, but using it is frowned upon. Stargaza enhances the mundane senses of the taker and allows them in addition to sense magic effortlessly; but all the information is distracting, and it enfeebles their minds and afflicts them with withdrawal and yearning for the drug for increasingly longer periods and with increasing severity after taking it each time. Yes, that sounds right to me, Oliver. So what do you say, knowing this? Oliver says, "Ah... I should have expected as much, considering its previous owner." A potent drug taken from Siarme's hoard. Oliver kept it. |
Wand of Paralysis | The woman grits her teeth as your steel meets her flesh, but it isn't enough to stop her. She pulls out a small wooden wand from her belt and points it at you. The tip of the wand flashes brightly and you feel the magic beginning to touch you. Kestrel flicks the wand at her. There's a flash of light, and she is paralyzed completely. Esti says that it inflicts a paralyzation spell on its target that freezes them completely for a little while. She warns you, however, that it only has a few charges left, by her estimate. Kestrel lets go of Ilun, runs for the wand of paralysis, and flicks it at him. You grab the wand while he's still surprised to even be here. You flick the wand at him, and he raises his hand instinctively. There's a spark of energy as he concentrates on resisting the spell. Kestrel flicks the wand again at Ilun, backing away slowly to where her sword rests against the wall. Ilun stands to his feet, his hand held out, his face tensed up in concentration. He slowly gets closer. "A clever trick. But you're merely delaying the inevitable." You flick the wand at the tentacles strangling you, Kestrel, and they go limp around your neck, freeing you. The wand turns to dust in your hand. A wand taken from one of Ilun's minions. Kestrel used the wand against the minion and later used it to distract Ilun long enough to let her grab her sword. She used the last charge on a tentacle monster under the ruined tower. |
Arrow of Assassination | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] a black, runed arrow [...] An arrow taken from Ilun's tower. Oliver took it. Name a target and shoot the arrow into the air -- no matter how far away they are, the arrow will strike them if at all possible. |
Pickpocket's Hand | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] a severed, preserved human hand [...] A magical hand taken from Ilun's tower. Nikolai took it. A severed, preserved human hand. Name an object small enough for it to carry, and roll+CHA. On a 10+, it steals it quickly and without any trouble. On a 7-9, it's not exactly what you wanted, or it takes a long time. |
Rapier of Bloodletting | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] a rapier made of dark metal [...] A rapier taken from Ilun's tower. Nikolai took it. This rapier has been imbued with dark magics. When you kill a creature whose blood you can feed off of with his sword, gain 1 Blood. |
Ointment of Disguise | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] three labeled clay jars [...] Nikolai sighs. he goes back to his house then, and takes the Ointment of Disguise... Very well. Your features distort, and you take the form of Tasuna Otzi. Presumably you keep the missing eye. A jar taken from Ilun's tower. Nikolai took it. He later used it to transform into the appearance of Tasuna Otzi, the vampire Ilun. Spread this ointment on your face and focus on your new appearance. You may take on the appearance of another person you know, or simply describe a new one entirely. The change is permanent, and can't be reversed by mundane means. |
Potion of Mutation | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] three labeled clay jars [...] A jar taken from Ilun's tower. Nikolai took it. Describe an adaptation, or any other beneficial change to your character's body. The GM will tell you what ingredient you must mix into this potion to make it possible. Drink the potion once you've done so, and you will gain the mutation permanently. |
Liquid Darkness | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] three labeled clay jars [...] Kestrel, it's an alchemical substance that, when released, unleashes a haze of darkness throughout the area. It has 3 uses. A jar taken from Ilun's tower. Kestrel took it. |
Black Eye | Nikolai, there are several unidentified objects around the laboratory. Fortunately, after looking around for a bit, you find a scroll of parchment with notes on most of them. [...] a black, oval shaped gem [...] Nikolai hurls his eye into the fireplace and watch as it easily catches fir and turns to ash. He runs back to his room, and grabs the magical black gem, and painfully, inserts it into his now empty and bleeding socket. You jam the eye into the socket, and the flesh starts to magically move around it, adjusting for the new eye until it feels just as natural as the old one. Can he actually see out of it? Yes, he can. The sight is just a shade different. It feels a little more sensitive to light. A magical gemstone taken from Ilun's tower. Nikolai took it and put it in after carving out his own eye with a dagger. By replacing your natural eye with this black gem, you gain +1 to Discern Realities against people or creatures, and on a success you may ask for free: "What is this creature's weakness?" |
Ilun's Experiment Notes | That's what you find in the lab, along with a sheaf of research papers detailing some interesting experiments that you may read more about, Nikolai. The papers mention some research Ilun was working on -- it seems he was on the verge of creating artificial life he could still feed upon. That's what you gather from a quick look, at least. Nikolai, you read through the papers. They describe Ilun's experiments -- he was trying to create life he could feed off of without all the usual fuss of a real human. First, you need a vial of pure human blood, and a well-preserved human heart. Then, there's a certain herb you need -- the stem of a black flower from Eldasharkai. There's one last ingredient, Nikolai, but it's only referred to with a word you don't recognize. The result, however, is a living human heart that produces fresh blood. Nikolai, searching through some old texts, you find out that the word translates roughly to 'soul'. A sheaf of papers recovered from Ilun's tower. Nikolai took them. |
Amulet of Telepathy | He [Argia Sua] says he's had such an item stored away for this kind of situation. He looks through his desk and pulls out two identical amulets, with ruby pendants. He presents one of them to you, Kestrel. "As long as we both wear it, we may speak over long distances. A very useful enchantment." Kestrel obtained this amulet from the magia, Argia Sua, so that the party could communicate with the Mages' District while undertaking their mission. |
The Celestial Spear, the Breaker of the Heavens | "We have just voted to begin the research and construction of a device that may be able to delay, or even stop entirely, the Planar Merge." Argia says, gesturing towards the blue lights. "It will take all of our resources and magical power and then some, along with a long lost artifact..." He clears his throat. "I did not summon you here to lecture you on our early history, so I will make it brief. In the First Age of man, the planes of the Sphaeram were all one. It was a place of chaos and death, and man, elf, dwarf, and halfling all struggled to survive. But the aboleths, the ancient creatures of the deep oceans, took pity on us, and granted us a part of their magics, an artifact that the sorceror-king Faraji used to separate them into the planes we know today. The artifact must be found again if this device is to work." Argia looks over the three of you. "You have accomplished great deeds here in Irla. Today I would ask you to accomplish the greatest of them all. You must venture to the cold wastes of the north, the Forgotten Lands, where man was born, and find it for us. It may be the only way civilization will live on." Argia nods to the four of you. "I am glad to know that it is in your hands, heroes. The artifact..." He waves his hand again towards the center of the room, and the lights shift into a strange object. "The Celestial Spear, the Breaker of the Heavens." Argia says, and it appears in blue light in the center of the room: a long trident. "It was forged from white coral by the aboleths, and imbued with magical properties we have never been able to replicate ourselves. In Faraji's ancient stronghold in the Forgotten Lands, I believe you will find it. But finding it will not be easy." The mages of Damerus, led by Argia Sua, claim that they will be able to prevent the Planar Merge by building a device using the Celestial Spear. |
