Name: Alios, the 'Holy Fire.'
Purpose: Dealing Justice, Purification > Cleansing by Fire, Punishment by Immolation.
The Immolation Inquisition: An order within the Knights Templar of the Church of Othnea. The Immolation Inquisition houses some of the most zealous, dedicated, and unhinged knights the Church has to offer. They are known for their insatiable desire to deliver justice, particularly by immolation. They typically wield burning swords which are believed to eternally ignite their victims in the afterlife as eternal punishment for their sins. This is considered the will of Alios, the 'Holy Flame', when dealing with criminals, sinners, and unbelievers. The soul must be purified by flame, if the penitent is to achieve salvation.
The Immolation Inquisition is lead by the Lady of Embers, Anarra Arundel, who serves the will of the Lord Commander of the Knight's Templar, Richard Provost. While the latter frequently chastises the former's order for its inclination towards excessive violence, the majority of the Church fears the Lady of Embers and her hot headed followers as rabid dogs who seem willing to rip anyone's arm (or head) off. This has made the Immolation Inquisition quite the effective order, earning a mountain of praise from the Queen of Othnea.
Ranks within the Immolation Inquisition are straightforward. From the bottom rung of the ladder to the highest: Initiate, Junior Inquisitor, Senior Inquisitor, Sear, Lady/Lord of Embers. Initiates spend over a dozen years honing their combat abilities while studying the teachings of Alios. Initiates become Junior Inquisitors after successfully identifying a heretic or non-believer within the Church, and subsequently executing them in front of their peers. Junior Inquisitors work exclusively within the realm of Othnea, pursuing blasphemers, criminals, and non-believers. Their restriction to the realm stems from their young age and need of oversight. Junior Inquisitors who reach a more senior age, with a proven record, attain Senior Inquisitor status. Senior Inquisitors are highly respected within the order, knowing no borders, and are given missions directly from the Lady of Embers or one of her Sears. There are three Sears within the Immolation Inquisition; each is a close adviser to the Lady of Embers - three right hands, so to speak. When a new Lady or Lord of Embers is needed, a Sear is voted to the position by earning a simple majority among the Senior Inquisitors.
-Appearance-
Selene's age shows well: her skin is gaunt, her features sharp, and her complexion pale and worn. Her hair shows signs of gray, and her blue eyes are faded. She is, however, in peak physical condition for her age. She doesn't seem to care much about her looks, save mildly for her hair. She keeps it tied back, with a carefully woven braid - common among Othnean villagers - along each temple. She's 5'10''.
-Background-
Selene was born and raised in a remote Othnean village. She was a delicate, serene, and beautiful woman back then, wanting nothing more from life than she already had. She got married by the age of 16, and had twin sons by the age of 18. Yet on one fateful day, everything she came to love and care for crumbled to pieces when a small group of deserters came across her village. Starved for food, water, gold, and lust, the village represented a great prize to be pillaged and marauded. The village had no soldiers to boast: just a few hunters and farmers, with fewer weapons between them. They were slaughtered in the ensuing battle.
When the attack began, Selene's husband was quick to rush to the village's defense, leaving Selene alone to defend their baby boys. After the horrifying sounds of battle eventually died down, an eerie silence lingered, broken by the occasional screams of women and children. Her and the boys were up next when a pair of deserters made their way into her home. The first lunged at Selene while the second sauntered over to the wailing babes. As she was tackled to the floor and forced upon, Selene watched in absolute horror as the second deserter herded her sons, grabbed one in each hand, and repeatedly smashed their skulls against the walls to shut them up. It was a nightmare painted in blood and gore. The mother's frenzy took over from there.
A week later, a contingent of Othnean knights arrived at the smoldering village to investigate what had happened there. They discovered a handful of survivors, including Selene, but not much else. The survivors were given a choice: declare allegiance to Alios and serve in his Church, or remain in the village to rebuild anew. Selene was quick to say her vows. The punitive teachings of Alios found a devout student in Selene; the overwhelming torment that festered within her hungered for righteous, bloody vengeance.
Selene chose to enlist as an initiate in the Immolation Inquisition, despite her 8 years of seniority over its oldest member, and spent the next 12 years training and studying. At the age of 30, she earned her inquisitor's signet ring by righteously executing one of her seniors from within the order: an extremely rare and remarkable achievement. In recognition of it, and in light of her age, Selene became the third initiate ever to become a Senior Inquisitor without having first served as a junior. It seemed even the Immolation Inquisition had reason to fear Selene Octavius, as she would go on to prove in the following years.
