Session 2
Forest Ambush
17 May 2015
23:23 <joo> You're standing in a clearing, all bleeding from many small wounds, while 9 dead dragonflies lie around you. One of them is impaled to a tree by one of Sparrow's throwing knives.
23:23 <joo> You can recover both of your knives, Sparrow.
23:24 <Vaylon> Hawthorn lets out a long breath. "That was unnecessary," he mutters, seemingly to the universe.
23:24 <Bruce> Waldemar pulls a cloth from his things, wiping his axe clean of the foul insect debris. He looks to Hawthorn and Sparrow: "Are you both well?"
23:24 <joo> Hahahahah.
23:25 <Theo> Sparrow moves to recover both his knives, wiping the blood on his clothes when he does so and giving a swift kick to one of the dead dragonflies. He turns to the others, wiping blood from his mouth, "We take one of these with us. That one which is pretty whole." He points a knife toward his cleanest kill, "They seem to deter the smaller bugs."
23:26 <Vaylon> Glancing up at Waldemar, Hawthorn says, "I live yet, but I can see that all of us are worse for the wear." He turns to Sparrow. "Can you find us a more-or-less safe place while I bandage our wounds?"
23:27 <joo> Time to use the Thief move, A More Or Less Safe Place.
23:28 <Vaylon> Theo, you forgot to note it on yuor character sheet, but you started with: dungeon rations (5 uses, 1 weight), leather armor (1 armor, 1 weight), 3 uses of your chosen poison, and 10 coins.
23:28 <Vaylon> That's in addition to the other things you chose.
23:28 <Theo> Sparrow snorts, sheathing his knives, "I will scout on ahead to find somewhere."
23:28 <Theo> Vaylon, I have that written in my notebook. I'm currently writing a better sheet
23:29 <Vaylon> Ah, okay.
23:29 <Theo> joo, shall I roll to see if there is anywhere I can get to undetected?
23:30 <joo> Hmm...
23:30 <Theo> I'm thinking maybe Spout Lore would be suitable
23:31 <Vaylon> I dunno -- sounds like Discern Realities to me.
23:31 <joo> I don't think there's any lore you will have heard about this part of the forest that would help you in that, but you could Discern Realities, yes, to see if you can find a place you could camp.
23:31 <Theo> Ah yes
23:31 <Theo> I was getting the two moves mixed up
23:32 <joo> As it currently looks, all of the forest ground in view after you descended from that earlier hilltop is soggy, and there isn't much shelter.
23:32 <Theo> !r 2d6-1 (Discern Realities)
23:32 <PageBot> Theo: 3=3+1(-1) (Discern Realities)
23:32 <joo> Unfortunately, Sparrow isn't the best character to be making this decision!
23:34 <Theo> Sparrow utters a mild curse, scratching his head, "I don't know this part of the forest too well. Tend to avoid the area." he says with a short shrug.
23:34 <joo> The local environment is alien to you, Sparrow; you've never heard of the forest being like this, and as look around, you're at a loss for a safe place to sleep except one back the way you came.
23:35 <Vaylon> Hawthorn looks concerned, but he nods understandingly. "Come around, then, and I'll do what i can."
23:35 <Theo> "The only place I know means a backtrack. Up to you two." Sparrow adds with a shrug.
23:36 <joo> There are hollow trees and some piles of mossy stones that perhaps you could find a nook in further back up the path, but it would take you maybe an hour to get there.
23:36 <Vaylon> He banadges Waldemar, then Sparrow, and lastly himself.
23:39 <Vaylon> Everyone recovers 4 HP from that.
23:39 <Vaylon> "That's the last of my bandages," says Hawthorn. "Let's move on."
23:39 <joo> Hawthorn bandages all of your more serious wounds well and tightly, which stops the bleeding, but doesn't do a lot for the pain. Everyone heals 4 HP, and Hawthorn uses all of his bandages.
23:40 <Bruce> Waldemar nods. "Onward!"
23:41 <joo> Where do you go now? The sound of insects around you is rising again, although it's not as high as it was before (as if the forest is listening to you).
23:42 <Theo> Sparrow grabs one of the dragonfly carcasses, holding it on his back, "Which way?" he asks, "Onward or back to the nook a while back to rest?"
23:42 <joo> Ahead, the path is almost pitch dark after a few metres, unless you make a light again.
23:43 <Theo> "Damn things shouldn' even be 'ere." Sparrow mutters under his breath, looking at each of the corpses.
23:44 <Vaylon> Hawthorn considers the darkness with some mild trepidation, glancing at Sparrow. "Well, perhaps we should go back. I would like to meditate for a while. "Why don't you sing a song to cheer our spirits?"
23:44 <Vaylon> Damn, I pressed enter too early.
23:44 <Vaylon> Hawthorn considers the darkness with some mild trepidation, glancing at Sparrow. "Well, perhaps we should go back. I would like to meditate for a while." He turns to Waldemar. "Why don't you sing a song to cheer our spirits?"
23:44 <joo> Sing a song, Sparrow! You're the bird.
23:46 <Theo> LOL!
23:46 <Vaylon> Haha.
23:49 <joo> In the distance, you hear a drawn-out scraping moan, which sounds a bit like someone roaring or like a tree falling over, following by some thudding.
23:50 <Bruce> Waldemar sings a bawdy song about one of the gods worshipped in the mountain lands, who took on the corporeal form of a minstrel and seduced the king of Blackstone's wife.
23:51 <Theo> "Don' like the sound of that." Sparrow mutters, turning to head back toward the hollow he saw on the way down here.
23:51 <joo> Heh.
23:51 <joo> What god is that?
23:52 <Vaylon> Hawthorn laughs softly at the song, though his ears prick up at the distant sound. "Quickly, if you please, gentlemen."
23:52 <joo> As you walk back up the hill, the air starts to smell better, and it's easier to breathe.
23:52 <Bruce> Waldemar increases the tempo of his walking.
23:53 <Vaylon> It's still day, right?
23:53 <joo> Yes, it's still day.
23:53 <joo> Which hollow are you referring to, Theo? Maybe you can describe exactly what it's like.
23:56 <Theo> Sparrow, walking quickly and tuning out the sound of the bard, makes a sharp turn into a thicket he spotted just off the weathered, overgrown path. It looks like this was once the nesting place of a larger forest creature, most likely a deer. A wall of brambles obscures the back and thick brush has been flattened, providing space to accommodate the trio.
23:56 <joo> Ah, a deer nest.
23:56 <Theo> *,if a little cramped
23:57 * Theo has just been watching Bambi XD
23:58 <joo> Very well, looks like it's deer eggs for lunch. But just as you're nearing this hollow, you hear footsteps and muted, angry voices coming from the direction of the river, just around a corner in the path!
23:58 <Bruce> The god's name is........ "Bragr".
23:58 <joo> Hahahah.
23:59 <Bruce> My strategy for naming things is to just take other, similar things and change one letter.
23:59 <joo> Let me guess: Bragr was the one who composed the song about himself, while still in Bard form.
23:59 <Bruce> Hahahaha.
--- Day changed Sun May 17 2015
00:00 <Bruce> Waldemar stops his mad singing. "Hrmph. I mislike this." He says, in a low voice.
00:01 <Theo> Sparrow pales a little at hearing the voices and mutters a short curse under his breath, "Bet anythin' that's the owner of the boat." he says in a hushed tone. He tries to judge the distance to the hollow, wondering if they can make it there without being spotted.
00:01 <joo> I didn't imagine that Waldemar had been singing for a full hour.
00:02 <Bruce> Heh. I didn't consider that.
00:02 <Bruce> He was probably done by then, yes.
00:02 <Bruce> You have to take care of your throat.
00:02 <joo> You could all run for to hide in this hollow before whoever is on the road comes around the corner to see you, you judge.
00:02 <joo> What do you do?
00:04 <joo> -for
00:04 <Vaylon> Hawthorn stops suddenly, and he nods silently to Waldemar, raising an eyebrow at what Sparrow says. "Owner?"
00:04 <joo> Hahah.
00:04 <Theo> Sparrow looks to the pair, his mouth set in a grim line, "We move fast. Get in the hollow. You two first." he tells them, hanging back to let them pass, "Questions later."
00:04 <Theo> XD
00:05 <joo> But an Imperial Guard pops out of the shrubbery, and has some questions for Sparrow.
00:05 <joo> (joke)
00:05 <Theo> LOL!
00:06 <joo> Is that what you do?
00:06 <Vaylon> Hawthorn gives a little nod and tries to hide in the hollow as quickly as hec an.
00:06 <Vaylon> *he can.
00:06 <Bruce> Waldemar frowns, but he goes along with this shady business for now.
00:08 <Theo> Sparrow dashes after them, pulling some branches to cover the hole
00:12 <joo> You get out of sight just as a small party of men, dressed as hunters and armed with a hodgepodge of odd weapons, make their way around the corner. The look like this: <http://units.wesnoth.org/1.12/pics/core$images$portraits$humans$transparent$outlaw.png> and this: <http://units.wesnoth.org/1.12/pics/core$images$portraits$humans$transparent$huntsman.png>.
00:14 <joo> A large man at the front is huffing as he walks, and is saying- "bastards gave us the slip! We shoulda' caught em much sooner than this."
00:15 <joo> At the back, you recognise the man from earlier, Jenkins, who carries a bow and is peering around silently.
00:15 <Theo> Sparrow, after peeking through the growth, turns to Hawthorn and Waldemar and holds a finger to his lips, turning back to watch and waiting for the footsteps to fade
00:16 <joo> They continue to walk along the path, past your camp site. "Don't worry, lads. It won't be long afore they come running back here." He chuckles darkly.
00:16 <Bruce> How many are there?
00:16 <joo> As they're going out of earshot you hear an argument starting, the loud man from earlier suggesting that they split up to search the forest more thoroughly - but they don't hear the conclusion.
00:17 <joo> 5 men in all.
00:17 <joo> *but you don't hear
00:17 <joo> Oh, and it was Jenkins who said "Don't worry, lads. ..."
00:19 <joo> The forest is silent again. Do you settle in to camp, as planned?
00:19 <Theo> Sparrow leans back and sighs, running his hands over his face, "The Gods damn us all." he mutters in a hushed voice, "Was your friend, Jenkins and 'is crew."
00:20 <Vaylon> Hawthorn frowns. "Let us rest here and be as quiet as we may. I must meditate."
00:21 <Vaylon> I say we rest here. I desperately need new spells.
00:21 <Theo> Sparrow nods, trying to cover the entrance to the hollow as naturally as possible, "'opefully they see the swamp flies an' think we pressed on."
00:23 <joo> Your trophy lies impassively, Theo, its eyes staring into space like those of a dead fish.
00:23 <joo> ...I mean Sparrow.
00:23 <Theo> I shall mount it on my wall!
00:23 <Bruce> Waldemar agrees to rest for now. "I'll keep an eye out for those swindlers, if need be."
00:25 <Theo> We make camp, then.
00:25 <Vaylon> Now, it sounds like we're Making Camp, but not long enough to heal. This was something that we never covered in any of our campaigns, especially in mine, because I'd been doing it wrong.
00:26 <joo> According to the move, you gain HP if you sleep for a few hours.
00:26 <Vaylon> Right. So we can Make Camp -but- not sleep, necessarily.
00:26 <Vaylon> You Make Camp when you stop to rest (to prepare spells or pray or whatever) and automatically consume a ration -- whether you sleep or not.
00:27 <Vaylon> I would suggest we don't linger here for long.
00:27 <joo> Yes, so in order for everyone to sleep, at least two people will need to stand watch.
00:28 <Vaylon> Right.
00:29 <Vaylon> Hawthorn settles in and begins to meditate, occasionally mumbling quietly to himself.
00:29 <Theo> Sparrow sits quietly, examining his trophy
00:29 <Vaylon> I will ask for Cure Light Wounds and Bless.
00:30 <Bruce> Waldemar watches from inside the hollow, like this: pbs.twimg.com/media/Br9PitDIAAAGoeS.jpg
00:32 <joo> Hahaha.
00:32 <joo> Hmm... well, as a compromise, I'll say that if you consume the rations and rest for say 3 hours, you can gain 1/4 of your hit points, even if you don't sleep.
00:33 <joo> Otherwise, you're not getting much at all.
00:34 <Theo> 4.75 hp
00:36 <joo> How long will you stay for, then, and will any of you attempt to sleep?
00:36 <Vaylon> joo: The exact times aren't that important, I feel, and I don't think there's any need to introduce special rules.
00:37 <Vaylon> I think it's too dangerous to try getting any sleep here.
00:38 <Theo> I wouldn't sleep here
00:40 <Bruce> Waldemar will do what I described.
00:41 <joo> Hmm... very well, then Hawthorn prepares his spells, and you all consume a ration, while Waldemar keeps watch... roll Take Watch!
00:41 <joo> I'll say that you don't gain any HP, if you're only going to stay here long enough to prepare spells.
00:41 <Bruce> !r 2d6 Take Watch
00:41 <PageBot> Bruce: 11=5+6 Take Watch
00:42 <Bruce> I successfully pickpocket Hawthorn's expensive watch.
00:42 <joo> Hahaha.
00:42 <Theo> XD
00:44 <Vaylon> Hah.
00:45 <Theo> Here is a more up to date sheet for Sparrow: pastebin.com/QAxkkJSM
00:48 <joo> Hawthorn, you hear a twig snapping, and you notice a bowman creeping towards the camp from the side, through some trees, while the large man from earlier is standing in watch behind him, wearing a long sword in his belt.
00:48 <joo> What do you do?
00:48 <Vaylon> Surely you mean Waldemar.
00:48 <Bruce> You mean Waldemar!
00:48 <joo> ...yes, I do.
00:48 <joo> I don't know why I keep confusing those two names.
00:52 <Bruce> Waldemar whispers: "They are upon us." I'm going to wait for the bowman to get closer, and then jump out to take him by surprise.
00:53 <Theo> Sparrow nods, drawing a throwing knife.
00:53 <Theo> I'll try Backstab on the big guy
00:54 <Bruce> If that's acceptable, Waldemar will jump out in front of the bowman, axe drawn! "Yield!"
00:55 <Vaylon> Hawthorn looks up in alarm and readies his staff.
00:55 <joo> That's acceptable.
00:56 <Bruce> Also, everyone takes +1 forward from my roll.
00:56 <joo> However, it will take a bit of time for Sparrow to get around behind the swordsman, so Waldemar will act first.
00:57 <joo> The bowman curses, and starts running back towards his friend. "They've seen us!"
00:57 <Theo> !r 2d6+2 (Backstab)
00:57 <PageBot> Theo: 8=4+2(+2) (Backstab)
00:57 <Theo> I'll take the additional d6 damage
00:57 <Bruce> Waldemar leaps forward and tackles this fool into the dirt!
00:58 <Theo> !r 2d6+2 (Volley)
00:58 <joo> Hmm... roll Hack and Slash, Waldemar.
00:58 <PageBot> Theo: 8=4+2(+2) (Volley)
00:59 <Bruce> !r 2d6+2 Hack and Slash
00:59 <PageBot> Bruce: 9=6+1(+2) Hack and Slash
00:59 <joo> What is the vollley roll for? I'm afraid that Backstab only applies to melee weapons.
00:59 <Theo> Oops! My mistake!
01:00 <joo> Sparrow can get behind the man and stab him with his dagger, if he's willing to expend that time.
01:00 <Theo> !r 2d6 (Hack and Slash)
01:00 <PageBot> Theo: 6=2+4 (Hack and Slash)
01:01 <joo> You don't need to roll Hack and Slash for Backstab, either - just the choices given in the move description.
01:01 <Theo> Really? I read that wrong then.
01:02 <Theo> !r d8+d6
01:02 <PageBot> Theo: 1+4
01:02 <joo> Roll your damage, Waldemar, which will be to stun, if you're just trying to restrain him.
01:02 <Bruce> Yes, I am.
01:02 <Bruce> !r d6 stun damage
01:02 <PageBot> Bruce: 5 stun damage
01:03 <joo> Maybe I should have made it Defy Danger with STR instead, but it doesn't matter because the roll is the same.
01:03 <Theo> Sparrow sneaks through the thicket, drawing a dagger. Managing to get behind the swordsman, he plunges the blade into his side.
01:06 <Vaylon> Hawthorn begins a prayer for his companion!
01:06 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+3 Cast a Spell (Bless)
01:06 <PageBot> Vaylon: 10=1+6(+3) Cast a Spell (Bless)
01:06 <Bruce> Sparrow definitely needs Jesus.
01:07 <Vaylon> Hawthorn calls down the Firebringer's blessing upon Waldemar.
01:09 <joo> Hmm... well, you manage to tackle the bowman to the ground, Waldemar, and he drops his bow, but he manages to pull a knife, and his arms are free enough for him to slash as you with it.
01:09 <joo> What will you do about this?
01:10 <Bruce> Waldemar will wrestle the dagger out of his hand to disarm him, with his Bardic Strength.
01:10 <joo> Setting up a Danger Train, eh?
01:10 <joo> You know it's awful when one of those derails.
01:11 <Bruce> Fucc u say
01:12 <joo> Hawthorn, you successfully cast your spell on Waldemar. Waldemar will take +1 forward while he still stands and fights, which I suppose in this case is a bit figurative.
01:13 <Vaylon> +1 ongoing, you mean.
01:13 <joo> Meanwhile, Sparrow, while Hawthorn is grappling with the bowman on the ground, you manage to run up behind his friend, who was running forward to assist him, and plunge your dagger into a gap in his leather armour.
01:13 <joo> ...yes, I mean ongoing.
01:15 <joo> He cries out in anger, and turns to face you, swinging his sword wildly.
01:15 <Theo> Sparrow withdraws backwards a few steps and draws his sword, circling them in his wrists with a sadistic grin on his face as he duel wields the blades, charging forward to attack again.
01:15 <joo> ...while Waldemar is grappling with the bowman!
01:16 <Theo> !r 2d6 (Hack and Slash)
01:16 <PageBot> Theo: 6=1+5 (Hack and Slash)
01:16 <Theo> :<
01:16 <joo> Waldemar, defy danger with strength to disarm your opponent.
01:16 <Bruce> !r 2d6+2 Defy Danger with STR
01:16 <PageBot> Bruce: 9=2+5(+2) Defy Danger with STR
01:17 <joo> !r d6 -- damage to Waldemar
01:17 <PageBot> joo: 6 -- damage to Waldemar
01:18 <Theo> Ouch
01:18 <Vaylon> Hold on a second.
01:18 <joo> You manage to knock his dagger out of his hand, but not before he gives you a deep cut down the arm with it.
01:19 <Vaylon> Oh, never mind. I thought Waldemar had 16 Strength.
01:19 <Vaylon> Hawthorn steps forward from the hiding spot and, surveying the scene, raises his staff and begins to chant in a louder, more confident tone.
01:19 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+1 Cast a Spell (Cure Light Wounds)
01:19 <PageBot> Vaylon: 9=5+3(+1) Cast a Spell (Cure Light Wounds)
01:20 <joo> The pinned man swears loudly and cries out. "Help! Help! He's got me!"
01:20 <Vaylon> Hawthorn touches Waldemar once he gets the man pinned.
01:20 <joo> !r d6 -- damage to Sparrow
01:20 <PageBot> joo: 3 -- damage to Sparrow
01:20 <Vaylon> !r 1d8 Healing (Waldemar)
01:20 <PageBot> Vaylon: 1 Healing (Waldemar)
01:20 <Bruce> Waldemar holds the man down for three seconds, and then his theme song begins playing.
01:22 <Bruce> No, he actually grabs the dagger and holds it to the man's throat. Can he do that?
01:22 <joo> Sparrow, despite your dexterity, the sheer force of his blow takes you by surprise, and you can't parry it: it knocks your own weapons back, and cuts into you a bit. You're forced back further into the woods, and the man stalks towards you angrily, readying another stroke. He doesn't heed his companion's cries.
01:23 <joo> Further down the path, however, there are answering calls.
01:24 <joo> Yes, you can do that easily now, Waldemar. The man doesn't resist when he feels the blade against his throat.
01:24 <joo> What is your choice for the spell, Vaylon?
01:25 <Bruce> "Silence!" He says. "You are beaten." He stands to his feet, pulling the man up with him, and looks out towards where the calls are coming from. What does he see?
01:25 <Theo> Sparrow backs up as he's pursued, stopping and thrusting his blade forward again to try get through the man's wild defences.
01:25 <Theo> !r 2d6 (Hack and Slash)
01:25 <PageBot> Theo: 5=1+4 (Hack and Slash)
01:25 <joo> Oh dear!
01:25 <Vaylon> I'll draw unwelcome attention or put myself in a spot.
01:25 <Theo> The dice hate me today
01:26 <joo> You're getting mad XP, though, m8.
01:26 <Vaylon> The dice hate everyone everyday.
01:26 <Theo> True, joo! Won't help me if I die though XD
01:30 <joo> Hawthorn, your spell is successful, and Waldemar's wounds heal slightly, but presently you hear an arrow whistling through the air towards you.
01:31 <joo> Waldemar, you see that the rest of the group, which consists of a man with a mace and and another man with a sword, and at the back, Jenkins with his hunting bow.
01:32 <joo> ...that they have just broken out of the trees.
01:32 <joo> And Hawthorn, you also see this, presumably, but perhaps you're more immediately concerned about the arrow being shot at you. What do you do about that?
01:34 <joo> !r d6 -- damage to Sparrow
01:34 <PageBot> joo: 5 -- damage to Sparrow
01:34 <Vaylon> Hawthorn, who is no warrior, flinches and raises his staff in an angle over him in the hopes that it deflects the arrow.
01:34 <joo> Heh.
01:35 <joo> Smash the arrow with your staff!
01:35 <joo> I think that's defying danger with either dexterity or constitution.
01:35 <joo> Since you're just hoping, it's probably CON.
01:35 <Vaylon> Yeah.
01:35 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+1 Defy Danger (CON)
01:35 <PageBot> Vaylon: 7=1+5(+1) Defy Danger (CON)
01:37 <joo> Sparrow, the man gets another fierce sword blow past your defences, and this time the point jabs into you, cutting through your armour. Your attacker coughs up some blood, and he himself appears to be getting weaker, as you are also from your wounds.
01:38 <Bruce> Waldemar barks at his hostage: "Be still!" He lets go of the man, sheathes the dagger in his belt, and rushes at the swordsman from behind, axe readied.
01:39 <Theo> Sparrow grunts as he's hit again, though does not give up, attempting again to get a hit in.
01:39 <Theo> !r 2d6 (Hack and Slash)
01:39 <PageBot> Theo: 8=6+2 (Hack and Slash)
01:40 <Theo> r d8
01:40 <Theo> !r d8
01:40 <PageBot> Theo: 5
01:43 <joo> Hawthorn, your arrow glances off your staff and thuds into your chest, but only pierces you lightly, giving a superficial wound. Its most dangerous effect is that it distracts you for a bit while your assailants from beyond get closer.
01:43 <joo> *the arrow
01:44 <joo> Waldemar, you can do this, but your supposed hostage has no reason to stay, so he'll probably escape to safety.
01:45 <Bruce> Yes, but at least I warned him.
01:45 <joo> But if you do, I think you can get there in time to save Sparrow from his enemy's counter-attack.
01:46 <joo> What do you do? Explode his head with your axe?
01:47 <Bruce> Waldemar will swing his fat axe low, heaving it into the swordsman's leg.
01:48 <joo> The disarmed attacker that Waldemar previously held prisoner grabs his fallen bow and runs for Jenkins and the others, who are approaching Waldemar. Jenkins puts another arrow to his bow. "See what happens when you spurn a kind offer of help? You'll die here, you pompous fool!"
01:48 <joo> ...I mean who are approaching Hawthorn.
01:50 <joo> Just as the swordsman is raising his weapon for a killing blow, Waldemar, your axe bites into his leg, delivering a nasty Flesh Wound. and he cries out in agony and falls forward... onto Sparrow's dagger.
01:50 <joo> FIRST HUMAN KILL
01:50 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says, "Kill me if you wish. I have no money, and you are all already damned to the abyss, so far as I can tell." Hawthorn begins to mutter a prayer. Sparrow, take flight!
01:51 <Theo> .:Achievement Unlocked!:.
01:51 <joo> ...well, Sparrow, you may choose to spare his life, if you wish.
01:51 <Theo> Nah. Kill the twat
01:51 <joo> Hahahah.

01:52 <Vaylon> The spell is revoked!
01:52 <Bruce> Does Waldemar still have his Blessing?
01:52 <joo> Yes, for now.
01:52 <Vaylon> Yes.
01:52 <Bruce> Okay.
01:52 <joo> Waldemar and Sparrow, you both have +1 ongoing as long as you continue to fight.
01:53 <Vaylon> That's +1 to all of your move rolls.
01:53 <joo> Jenkins scowls and releases another arrow at you, Hawthorn, while you're praying.
01:54 <Vaylon> I have faith in god! I will endure the arrow!
01:54 <joo> Try it, motherfucker!
01:54 <Theo> Sparrow twists his dagger in the swordsman, making sure he's dead, "Hawthorn." He says simply to Waldemar, kicking the corpse from his dagger and dashing forward, pulling a throwing knife from his belt and launching it at Jenkins.

01:58 <Vaylon> I will lose 1 armor for now.
01:59 <joo> Very well. The arrow tears through your leather armour, but only grazes you lightly, once again. Jenkins is so incensed that you're still standing that he doesn't notice the knife flying at his head.
01:59 <Bruce> Waldemar looks grimly at the fallen bandit, then to Sparrow. He sings in the deep, booming tongue of the giants as Sparrow throws his dagger towards Jenkins.

02:05 <joo> Sparrow, you heal 6 HP from Waldemar's song.
02:07 <joo> The bowman aims his arrow at Sparrow.
02:08 <Bruce> "Sparrow" is close enough to "arrow" that the game engine will let me use him as a unit of ammo.

02:26 <joo> Oh... I described Hawthorn's armour as being leather before, but it's actually mail. My mistake.

02:27 <joo> It's just really shitty mail that breaks after a few arrows.
02:27 <joo> Hahaha. Yes, that works.
02:27 <Vaylon> On a 6 or less, the GM says what happens.
02:28 <joo> The fleeing bowman escapes into the trees. The lone swordsman, his fight with the priest not appearing to go well, also starts to back away.
02:28 <joo> Yes, usually that's the case, but I do take suggestions.
02:28 <Vaylon> The reason for that is that a 6 or less is not necessarily a "failure" but rather a cue to let the GM take a turn describing what happens next.
02:28 <Theo> Oh my post wasn't serious! XD
02:28 <Vaylon> Oh, I see. Haha.

02:48 <Vaylon> Hawthorn calls to Waldemar and Sparrow; in an urgent voice, he says, "Let us continue on our journey while they flee. These men are evil, but it is not our place to mete out death." He glances over his shoulder toward the forest. "Only a fool would seek to follow us from here."
02:51 <Vaylon> "You mentioned something earlier about those," he says to Sparrow, gesturing to the giant insect strapped to his back. "Is there something wrong? You seemed confused when we reached the marsh."
02:53 <joo> Yes. What kind of fool would go into a demented forest like that?
02:54 <Theo> Standing straight and sheathing his blades, he nods at Hawthorn, "These dragonflies are normally only found in the swamp. I find it pretty peculiar to find em here in the deep forest." he says, hacking up and spitting on the ground.
02:55 <Vaylon> "From the look of things, I would say that *was* the swamp."
02:56 <Theo> Sparrow shakes his head, "Swamp is south o' the town. No where near 'ere."
02:57 <Vaylon> Hawthorn frowns. "Mysterious. Perhaps we will find answers deeper within." He turns to Waldemar. "Are you hurt?"

03:06 <joo> Thanks for translating, Theo. I just find these foreign time systems difficult sometimes.

03:08 <Bruce> Loot their brains for knowledge!
03:09 <Theo> Iguess it'll be Sparrow then XD
03:09 <Vaylon> If Hawthorn had a reasonable suspicion that one of them knew something relevant, he might be tempted to ask, but at the moment, I think he believes he is pressed for time.
03:09 <Theo> "One moment." Sparrow says, going to the swordsman he killed, rifling the pockets of the corpse.
03:15 <joo> Apart from his long sword, which is in good condition and could probably be sold for about 15 coins, you find in an inner pocket a small pouch containing 18 coins, and a small bottle of whiskey which you judged was produced in one of the local farm towns to the east of Haisford.
03:16 <joo> Then you find a small metal flask of whiskey in his pants pockets.
03:17 <joo> It appears that his man was quite fond of his drink, in addition to having a choleric temperament!
03:17 <joo> *this
03:18 <Theo> Sparrow keeps hold of the sword and shares the coins out with Hawthorn and Waldemar, finally taking the whisky and hip flask, taking a deep drink from the flask.
03:18 <Theo> "Drinker. Probably got paid for his sword. Poor bastard if 'e did."
03:18 <joo> It's not the finest whiskey, but it burns pleasantly on the way down and soothes you a bit.
03:19 <Theo> Sparrow kicks the corpse and moves onto the second man killed, searching him.
03:19 <joo> Hahah. Sparrow loves to kick them when they're down.
03:20 <Theo> Yup!
03:20 <Theo> He should probably stop doing that. I picture you making a zombie of some sort XD
03:20 <joo> Hahah.
03:21 <joo> On the second man, who was wielding a heavy mace which is not in as good condition as the sword, but still serviceable, you find a long belt knife, a set of brass knuckles, a healing potion, and a pack of Dungeon Rations (5 uses, 1 weight).
03:22 <Vaylon> Hawthorn looks at the money and frowns.
03:22 <joo> Oh, and the tags for the weapons are...
03:22 <joo> Longsword (close, +1 damage, 2 weight)
03:22 <joo> Mace (close, 2 weight)
03:23 <joo> (It's of crude construction compared to most maces.)
03:24 <joo> Brass knuckles (hand, 0 weight), which will also allow you to deal damage in situations where using your fists would not be feasible.
03:25 <joo> I will assume it's 6 coins each.
03:25 <Bruce> Waldemar takes those sick knuckles!
03:25 <joo> What a beast.
03:26 <Bruce> I'd suggest Hawthorne take them, since he's sort of a monk, but he seems to stay on Defense.
03:26 <Vaylon> Hawthorn takes the food and the healing potion.
03:26 <Theo> Sparrow takes the belt knife
03:27 <Vaylon> Hawthorn frowns at the dead bodies, and he says to Waldemar, "These men have spent a lifetime robbing and murdering. It is an end that befits them."
03:27 <Vaylon> "Still, I do not condone violence. We should try to avoid it whenever possible."
03:28 <joo> Oh, yes, the belt knife also has hand range, like a dagger, but it's one which is more useful for cutting through leaves and other non-martial purposes.
03:28 <joo> And it's 1 weight.
03:29 <joo> So you're now rocking a dagger, a belt knife, a short sword and a long sword, eh, Sparrow?
03:29 <joo> And throwing knives.
03:30 <Theo> "I don't know where ya come from cleric, but ya in Haisford now. Folk like this, only language they understand is violence." he says, spitting on the corpse as he stands up, taking another gulp of the flask.
03:30 <joo> I believe you have 2 throwing dagger left, and one left with Jenkins.
03:31 <Theo> He'll be selling the sword and yeah, I'm down to 2 knives
03:31 <Vaylon> He gives the men some last rites, stroking his beard anxiously.

03:44 <Bruce> Could this be the first time someone has earned 0 XP?
03:45 <Vaylon> I did. I think Hawthorn endangered himself to heal another when he stepped out of hiding to heal Waldemar -- even if Waldemar had the guy pinned, there were others shooting.
03:45 <joo> Yes, Sparrow did indeed avoid detection when he backstabbed that swordsman, even though it didn't go well for him afterwards.
03:45 <Theo> I'd agree Hawthorn did
03:46 <joo> Yes, that's true enough.
03:46 <joo> Waldemar didn't manage to avoid conflict in this session.
03:46 <joo> Are there any bonds to form or resolve?

01:30 <joo> Hawthorn, your spell is successful, and Waldemar's wounds heal slightly, but presently you hear an arrow whistling through the air towards you.
01:31 <joo> Waldemar, you see that the rest of the group, which consists of a man with a mace and and another man with a sword, and at the back, Jenkins with his hunting bow.
01:32 <joo> ...that they have just broken out of the trees.

02:03 <joo> Jenkins gasps as a knife appears in his chest, and points at Sparrow, crying, "Get him!" before staggering for the cover of a tree.
02:04 <joo> The mace-wielding man, who is Jenkin's tall companion from earlier, runs towards Sparrow and Waldemar, while the recovered bowman nocks an arrow, and the swordsman runs at Hawthorn.
02:08 <joo> Hahah.
02:09 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says, "I don't know what you seek to accomplish with this." He raises his staff and prepares to defend himself against the approaching swordsman.

02:10 <joo> Hold 1. The swordsman is upon you, driving his sword point-first.
02:12 <joo> The bowman looses his arrow, Sparrow, and you manage to avoid it; but you are unable to get much closer to him, due to his mace-wielding friend.'
02:12 <Bruce> Waldemar lets out a roar and charges towards the mace-wielder, swinging his axe low and striking with all his momentum.
02:12 <Vaylon> All right. I'll halve the swordman's effect or damage.

02:15 <joo> Hawthorn, you knock the swordsman's weapon off centre a bit, but it still pierces you in the arm. The shaft of your staff slides down the blade and hits him painfully in the hand, forcing him to move back to recover.
02:17 <joo> What is the extra damage from, Bruce
02:17 <joo> ?
02:17 <joo> Oh!
02:17 <Bruce> Hack and Slash.
02:17 <joo> Yes, very well.

02:20 <joo> However, this opens himself up to a fatal stroke from your axe, and you are left standing, while he falls to the ground, dead.
02:20 <Vaylon> Hawthorn cries, "Leave us be, ruffians!" He swings his quarterstaff with all his might at the swordsman's head.

02:21 <joo> Why don't you make a pastebin account so you can edit it?
02:21 <Vaylon> No, no -- she means the last post.
02:21 <joo> Oh.
02:21 <joo> Yes, very well.
02:21 <Vaylon> Theo, the best advice I can give you for the way joo does things is wait to see what he says happens, first.
02:22 <joo> Roll your damage, Hawthorn.
02:22 <joo> Er... well, make your choice.
02:22 <Vaylon> I actually have to look up the Cleric's damage because I wasn't expecting to have to fight.
02:22 <Theo> Sparrow runs forward toward the bowman, letting out a roar as he attempts to run him through with his sword.

02:25 <Bruce> Waldemar pulls his axe from the fallen man's body. "A pitiful death, but I shed no tears for your ilk! Who next?!" Is Jenkins still hiding behind that tree like a mad bitch?
02:26 <Theo> My first +10 roll and I can't use it XD
02:26 <joo> Oh... I described Hawthorn's armour as being leather before, but it's actually mail. My mistake.
02:27 <Theo> Sparrow attempts to run after the bowman, but trips and falls flat on his face.
Haha.
02:29 <joo> I accepted it because it's funny, and enough of a demeaning failure to be worth a 6-.
02:29 <Theo> Haha! Thanks, joo XD
02:29 <Vaylon> Ah, Theo, do you still have a copy of the rules PDF?
02:29 <PageBot> Ah, Theo, do you bum have a copy of the rules PDF?
02:30 <Vaylon> So close, PageBot.
02:30 <Theo> No they were on my old HDD which fried
02:30 <Vaylon> Ahh.
02:30 <Theo> I have a website open with it on
02:30 <joo> You can get it from joo.uk.to/~jc/DungeonWorld.pdf
02:31 <joo> That contains some things which for example dungeonworldsrd.com does not.
02:32 <Vaylon> Whoops.
02:33 <joo> Two men lie dead in your midst, and 3 are getting away. Sparrow is recovering from his fall, which might be excused given the wounds he's suffered recently. What do you do, Waldemar and Hawthorn?
02:34 <Vaylon> What's the swordsman in front of me doing?
02:34 <Bruce> Did you answer my question about Jenkins?
02:35 <joo> Oh; you don't know, but Jenkins isn't anywhere to be seen. The swordsman that Hawthorn was fighting is backing away, also trying to retreat in the same direction.
02:36 <Vaylon> Hawthorn thrusts his staff in front of him to keep the swordsman at bay, and he calls out: "Waldemar! Sparrow! Are you well?"
02:38 <Theo> Sparrow pushes himself up, shaking his head, "Well enough." he grumbles back, pulling out a knife in a desperate attempt to kill the swordman.

02:39 <Bruce> Waldemar looks to Hawthorn and nods. He runs for the tree Jenkins hid behind and looks for him.
02:39 <Vaylon> It happens to the best of us.
02:39 <Bruce> There's a pill for it, you know.
02:40 <Vaylon> Yes, but you'll be banned from the casino for life if they discover it.
02:41 <joo> Sparrow, as you're lining up your shot at the swordsman, the bowman from before peeks out of some branches and looses an arrow at you, providing covering fire for his comrade's escape. You'll have to abandon your attack if you wish to avoid getting hit.
02:43 <Theo> I'll abandon the attack
02:44 <joo> More arrows fly from the trees, and a hoarse voice shouts, "run for the boat! We'll finish this later."
02:45 <joo> You may pursue the escaping men, but to do so you'll have to evade the arrows somehow.
02:46 <Vaylon> No, fuck that.
02:46 <joo> Ah, and Waldemar, you face the same choice in your search for Jenkins.
02:47 <Bruce> Waldemar will let them bounce. For now.
02:47 <PageBot> Waldemar will let them bum. For now.
02:47 <Vaylon> Hah.
02:47 <Theo> Either works!
02:47 <joo> Bum bandits.
02:48 <joo> Good fite. Let me recoup myself with some smoked cheese and take a fat piss. I'll return shortly.
02:48 <Theo> Sparrow gasps for breath, leaning forward and putting his hands on his thighs
02:57 <Vaylon> Hawthorn places a hand on Sparrow's shoulder and begins to mutter a spell under his breath.

03:01 <Bruce> Waldemar puts away his axe. "I took a hard blow." He says, with a nod.
03:02 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods his head, approaches Waldemar, and puts a hand on his shoulder. "I will do what I can for you," he says with a tired smile before beginning a soft muttering once more.

03:04 <Bruce> What time of day is it?
03:05 <joo> The sun has passed its peak in the sky. You estimate that it's about 3 bongs.
03:06 <Vaylon> Hawthorn frowns, a hand stroking his long beard in thought. "Let us be on our way. I wish to see what is ahead on our path. And I have a feeling that they will regroup."
03:06 <Bruce> What.
03:06 <Theo> 3pm
03:06 <joo> Thanks for translating, Theo. I just find these foreign time systems difficult sometimes.
03:07 <Vaylon> Haha.
03:07 <Theo> XD
03:07 <Vaylon> I'm surprised no one's going to search the corpses.
03:08 <Vaylon> Hawthorn certainly isn't going to do it.
03:08 <joo> What if one of them has some Knowledge?
03:32 <Vaylon> "Let us be on our way, then."
03:34 <Theo> Sparrow nods, leading off down the path back toward the clearing.
03:35 <Vaylon> What's everyone's HP at?
03:35 <Theo> I'm at 16 now I believe
03:35 <joo> I have Waldemar 8/22, Sparrow 11/19, Hawthorn 9/21.
03:36 <Theo> I don't think I'll be much longer guys. My head is really starting to pound
03:36 <joo> Hmm... but I might have missed some healing.
03:36 <Bruce> You forgot Hawthorn's healing.
03:36 <Bruce> For Waldemar, at least.
03:36 <Theo> And Sparrow
03:36 <joo> Yes, so it appears.
03:36 <Vaylon> I healed both Sparrow and Waldemar.

03:37 <joo> If that's the case, we can end it here.
03:37 <Vaylon> Yeah, I'm okay with stopping here.
03:38 <Bruce> Maybe we can play some Mini Dungie Gally in a bit, then.
03:39 <joo> Yes, that would be well-timed.
03:39 <joo> Taking into account the healing, I have Waldemar at 14/22, Sparrow at 16/19, and Hawthorn at 9/21.

03:41 <Bruce> Man, Sparrow can probably level up already.
03:41 <joo> Sparrow will certainly be able to level up next time he rests, then.
03:41 <Theo> He can
03:41 <joo> Did you learn anything new and important about the world?
03:41 <Vaylon> Nope.
03:41 <Bruce> Axe kill good.
03:41 <joo> Too bad.
03:41 <joo> Did you defeat a notable enemy or monster? Probably not.
03:42 <joo> Did you loot a memorable treasure?
03:42 <Vaylon> Nope.
03:42 <Vaylon> And nope.
03:42 <Theo> First human!
03:42 <Theo> Whiskey!
03:42 <joo> Hahah. I was thinking of the whiskey.
03:42 <Theo> ^_^
03:42 <joo> But if you drink enough of that, you might forget it, anyway.
03:42 <Vaylon> Hah.
03:43 <joo> Unfortunately, I don't think those count in the grand scheme of things. There are far more notable enemies and memorable treasures in the world.
03:43 <joo> Or even within your reach.
03:43 <joo> Which characters satisfied their alignment move?
03:44 <Theo> I did I think
03:44 <Bruce> I did not.
03:44 <Theo> Avoid detection
03:47 <Vaylon> I don't have any.
03:47 <Theo> Nope
03:48 <Vaylon> Nope.
03:48 <Bruce> Nope.
03:48 <Vaylon> Before they depart, Hawthorn strips off his mail and discards it.
03:49 <joo> Very well; then Waldemar wins 0 XP, Sparrow gets 6, and Hawthorn gets 1, which puts them at 3, 10, and 4 XP, respectively.
