Session 4
Divine Favour
14 June 2015
01:40 <joo> You all spent the night in the shrine of the forest goddess Dysus, if I'm correct. However, more or less all of your gear was soaked by the foul swamp waters as you swam through them, including your rations. Waldemar's bow can be dried out, but most of your rations are now of questionable quality. However, you have enough to eat safely for this night.
01:40 <Vaylon> Does everyone have rations on them?
01:41 <Vaylon> So we can mark off 1 ration and be okay, but the rest may be harmful, right?
01:41 <joo> Yes, everyone does.
01:41 <Theo> Ffs. I can't log in to pastebin >_<
01:42 <joo> Yes. All consume 1 ration, heal half of your max HP (round up, because it's Hard Mode, but Hard Mode works against your enemies too), and Sparrow and Hawthorn may level up.
01:43 <joo> While sleeping here, you are protected by Dysus, so there's no need to set a watch.
01:44 <Theo> Finally!
01:44 <Bruce> What is my XP at, again?
01:44 <Bruce> I have it at "3", but I don't want to believe that.
01:44 <joo> 6/8.
01:44 <Bruce> Okay.
01:44 <Vaylon> My XP is 9/8, right?
01:44 <joo> Yes.
01:45 <joo> And Sparrow's should be 12/8.
01:45 <joo> Enjoy the fact that they form an arithmetic sequence.
01:46 <Theo> That is pleasing to the eye
01:48 <joo> By the way, your maximum HP also form an arithmetic sequence, and after resting, Sparrow has 19/19, Hawthorn 20/21, and Waldemar 20/22.
01:49 <Bruce> oof
01:50 <joo> Hawthorn, your -1 ongoing to cast a spell ends, also, when you sleep.
01:51 <Theo> I've picked Cheap Shot for my level up skill.
01:51 <Vaylon> Hawthorn will level up, taking +1 Intelligence and the move First Aid.
01:51 <joo> You're taking the Kestrel route, I see.
01:52 <Theo> Oh do I get a point as well?
01:52 <Vaylon> Yep.
01:52 <Theo> And what XP do I need to earn now? 9?
01:52 <joo> Yes.
01:54 <Theo> Alright. +1 to strength.
01:54 <joo> Very good.
01:54 <Theo> And updated my pastebin.
01:56 <joo> During the night, you can hear the restless creaking of trees, and some strange, inhuman wails; but nothing intrudes on the shrine. Dysus's avatar remains floating near the ceiling, with her eyes closed in apparent deep concentration. You could probably look up her dress, if you dared.
01:56 <Theo> Sparrow attempts a peek.
01:57 <Bruce> I just had a song stuck in my head and had to search "doot doot doot do do do do" in Google to find it, but now the game has my full concentration.
01:58 <joo> Sparrow, you gaze upon her godly thighs, and you can also see that it's Natural up there.
01:58 <Theo> Sparrow nods in satisfaction and goes to sit down, sharpening his sword.
01:58 <Vaylon> Heh.
01:59 <Theo> (And that is not a euphomism!)
01:59 <joo> I hope he does that under the covers, at least.
02:00 * Theo can't spell
02:00 <Theo> LOL!
02:00 <Bruce> Sparrows nods in satisfaction and goes to sit down, sharpening his sword, and he also pops a huge boner.
02:00 <Vaylon> Hawthorn will commune with the Firebringer and request the following spells in addition to his rotes (which now include Cure Light Wounds): Bless, Detect Magic, and Speak With Dead.
02:01 <Bruce> Let's go back to those bandits we killed and start talking shit.
02:01 <Vaylon> Heh!
02:01 <Vaylon> Hawthorn, seeing the dismal state of everyone's food, will request that they bring it all to him.
02:01 <joo> Then he just eats it all.
02:01 <Bruce> Waldemar reluctantly turns over his rations.
02:02 <Vaylon> "Bring me the food, such as it is, and I will purify it."
02:02 <Theo> Sparrow looks at Hawthorn and throws his pack of rations toward him, going back to running a rock down his blade.
02:03 <Vaylon> Hawthorn gathers all the food together in his arms and begins to pray over it.
02:04 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+2 Cast a Spell: Sanctify
02:04 <PageBot> Vaylon: 10=3+5(+2) Cast a Spell: Sanctify
02:05 <joo> The poison in the food is purged by holy fires, and it now takes on a more wholesome appearance than it even had when you first obtained it.
02:05 <Vaylon> After a few moments, Hawthorn looks satisfied, and he turns from Sparrow to Waldemar, saying, "This food is clean. It may harm those of extreme evil. Take it as a sign that the Firebringer smiles on our cause."
02:06 <Vaylon> And Hawthorn gives everyones food back.
02:06 <Bruce> Oh no. We were eating fucking evil food before.
02:06 <Vaylon> *everyone's
02:06 <Vaylon> Haha!
02:06 <joo> Waldemar and Sparrow each gave 3 rations, and Hawthorn had 4.
02:06 <Bruce> I thought Hawthorn literally threw his rations into a lake.
02:07 <joo> He threw 4 rations at the giant dragonflies to distract them, if that's what you mean.
02:07 <joo> However, he still has more left, because he picked some up from a corpse.
02:07 <Bruce> Oh.
02:07 <Bruce> I thought he was just Wasteful.
02:09 <Theo> Sparrow nods thanks to Hawthorn, attaching his pack to his belt. He stands and sheaths his sword, hooking his thumbs in his belt, "I've done what you required of me, be it not the best tour I've ever done." he says, before muttering under his breath, "Nor the most profitable."
02:12 <joo> In the morning, Dysus speaks to you all: "I have spent the night communing with the spirits, birds and beasts of the forest whom I can still reach, which are not many, alas. Everywhere on this side of the river are the signs of Evil that have seeped in from the rotting lands to the South."
02:14 <joo> She hovers down to the ground to look at all of you intently. "I've also learned the source of this evil: there is a tomb of an ancient warlord that used to lie sealed in the middle of the Southern lands, but has now been breached. Birds tell me of unwholesome creatures corrupted by what's inside roaming in the night, and they are centred around the site where the tomb is known to be."
02:16 <Bruce> Waldemar looks to Sparrow. "A warlord's tomb, filled with a warlord's spoils! If we go there, you might make a profit yet."
02:16 <joo> "My power is only in this forest, so all I can do is defend it against these." She looks you all in the eyes. "Please, humans. You are brave warriors: reseal the tomb, or destroy the evil within it, so that all lands do not fall victim to this."
02:18 <Vaylon> Hawthorn ponders the meaning of this for some time. He looks from Waldemar and Sparrow. "Do either of you know of this warlord?"
02:20 <Vaylon> By the way, make sure you note that your rations are now blessed or holy. I'm sure it might help, maybe.
02:21 <joo> It means that your shit now glows in the dark.
02:21 <Vaylon> Haha.
02:21 <Vaylon> joo, I have two healing potions on my sheet. I had three, right, and I used one in a sacrifice?
02:21 <Vaylon> Or did I use one and forget to mark it off?
02:22 <Bruce> Waldemar strokes his moustache gently. "I do not know the history of these lands, but a closer look might shed some light on who they were."
02:23 <Theo> Sparrow sighs heavily, pulling his hood down and scratches the back of his head, "How do I always get myself into this kind of stuff?" he mumbles to himself, before striding toward Hawthorn, "I know nowt of the warlord." he says simply, curling his hand around his shortsword hilt, "I doubt it'd be safe going the way we came in."
02:24 <Theo> "Them bastards might still be lookin' for us, not to mention the dragonflies."
02:25 <Bruce> Waldemar nods, and looks back to the forest spirit. "I will agree to fight for you, kind spirit, if you would grant me but one last boon: a lock of hair from your head!"
02:25 <Theo> Sparrow mutters quietly, "I'd rather have a lock from somewhere else..."
02:26 <joo> Vaylon: I have 2 healing potions recorded for Hawthorn. You started with 1, and found 1 on a slain enemy. I can't remember where you got the third potion, if there was one.
02:26 <Bruce> "I shall fight with the strength of ten men with a token to remind me of the beauty I defend."
02:26 <Bruce> Damn, Sparrow.
02:26 <Theo> XD
02:27 <joo> It's a good thing Waldemar specified "from your head," or she might have misunderstood.
02:27 <Bruce> Hahaha.
02:28 <joo> Vaylon: so I guess that I forgot to mark one off when you sacrificed it, and Hawthorn really has one potions.
02:28 <joo> -s
02:30 <Vaylon> Sorry, I'm back.
02:33 <joo> Dysus looks at you incredulously, Waldemar. "I've never received such a bold request as this, but how can I deny one made so eloquently? Very well, Human, I will broker a deal with you: In exchange for a lock of my hair, you will fight to put this evil to rest, to the death, if necessary." Her face darkens. "And if you turn aside from the task, a curse will be placed upon you and all your ...
02:33 <joo> ... descendants."
02:34 <Bruce> Waldemar does not hesitate. "Very well. I accept!"
02:35 <Vaylon> Hawthorn chuckles at Dysus.
02:35 <Vaylon> And at Waldemar!
02:37 <joo> Overnight, Dysus' appearance also transformed, and she now looks more wholesome than ever. Only faint lines on her face recall her previous cursed form. Her hair is long, wavy, silver-green-gold, and soft. She produces a sharp-edged obsidian knife and cuts a generous lock of it, handing it to Waldemar.
02:38 <Bruce> Waldemar resists the urge to take a deep sniff of it for now.
02:38 <joo> "Keep this token on your person, and I will be able to communicate with you even when you are outside the forest."
02:38 <joo> Hahahah.
02:38 <joo> Careful: she can read your thoughts now.
02:38 <joo> (joke)
02:38 <Theo> Sparrow better arrange his thoughts then XD
02:39 <Bruce> Waldemar wears the forest spirit's favor on his belt.
02:41 <Theo> Sparrow drums his fingers against the hilt in his hand, seemingly pondering something.
02:42 <Vaylon> Hmm.
02:42 <Vaylon> So the forest is getting better?
02:45 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says to Dysus, "I cannot rest until I have put a stop to this evil plaguing the land."
02:45 <Vaylon> He turns to Sparrow. "You will accompany us, yes? This is your home as well, and eventually the evil will threaten it."
02:48 <Theo> Sparrow glances up at Dysus and sighs loudly, "Guess I have no choice." he grumbles, pulling his hood back up roughly. He holds a finger up, "But I still expect my fee for bringing you here. Man's gotta eat and sleep and... other things I won't say in front of a holy man."
02:48 <joo> Hahaha.
02:48 <Theo>
02:49 <joo> I don't think Dysus said anything to suggest that the forest as a whole is getting better, but the part of it immediately local to this shrine is.
02:49 <Vaylon> I see.
02:50 <joo> Outside the shrine, the dragonflies have dispersed, and no evil spirits can be seen; and small shoots of new growth can be seen everywhere.
02:50 <Vaylon> Hawthorn chuckles. "You will get your fee."
02:50 <joo> There are also some bones sticking out of the ground, and old rusted armour and weapons lying about, among other detritus surrounding the shrine.
02:51 * Theo pictures cursed armour.
02:52 <Theo> Sparrow looks among the weapons for any throwing knives.
02:53 <Vaylon> Hawthorn turns to Waldemar. "Have you any hurts or concerns that need tending before we embark?"
02:56 <Vaylon> What's Waldemar's specialty, again?
02:56 <Bruce> Legends.
02:57 <joo> Sparrow, you can see the handle of what look like a throwing daggers sticking out from a pile of bones and old rotted leaves. When you try to pull it out, a skeletal hand follows, grasping it, and you unearth the upper half of a relatively fresh human skeleton, missing its lower jaw.
02:57 <joo> Fortunately, it is immobile.
02:58 <joo> The knife in its hand is rusted beyond use, but you can see two more in a leather pouch at its side, which had been kept well oiled by its previous owner, so are still usable, and in this pouch also is a small stoppered glass vial of clear liquid.
02:59 <Vaylon> Oh no!
02:59 <Bruce> Waldemar shakes his head. "No, I am ready to find this tomb."
02:59 <Theo> "Get off! It's no use ta you nay more!" Sparrow says, flinging the arm away and grabbing the usable knives and pouch. He looks at the vial with a small "Huh." and pockets it.
03:01 * Theo swears, "I've just spilt hot soup all over me." >_<
03:01 <joo> Oh no!
03:02 <Vaylon> D:
03:02 <Vaylon> Theo, go wash yourself with cold water quick before you get burned. >_<
03:02 <Theo> It's chicken as well. Cleaning it up is making it look worse D:
03:02 <joo> On honour of Theo's mishap: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJWI9wq97Bs
03:03 <Theo> LOL!
03:03 <Theo> Vaylon, I have my trouser leg up with a cold cloth over it.
03:03 <Vaylon> Okay.
03:06 <joo> The morning is getting late. There is some birdsong around, but less than you'd expect this deep in the forest. What do you do?
03:06 <Vaylon> Sparrow can get me to identify the vial later.
03:06 <Vaylon> Or fail at it.
03:06 <Theo> XD
03:07 <Bruce> Waldemar suggests we Fly by Night to reach the tomb by stealth.
03:07 <Vaylon> Hmm.
03:08 <Vaylon> Do any of us actually know where this tomb is?
03:09 <Vaylon> Actually, that's kind of a Spout Lore roll.
03:09 <Theo> "The quickest route to the swamp is through the forest I would say." Sparrow says, picking his teeth with one of his throwing knives, "From there we can start looking for that relic or tomb or whatever it was."
03:10 <Vaylon> But I thought maybe Waldemar's bardic knowledge would come in handy here.
03:10 <joo> Dysus tells you that the tomb is a day's birdflight South-East of here.
03:11 <Vaylon> Ah, okay.
03:11 <joo> "When you first encounter an important creature, location, or item (your call) covered by your bardic lore you can ask the GM any one question about it; the GM will answer truthfully."
03:11 <Vaylon> Oh! Encounter it.
03:11 <Vaylon> I forgot about that.
03:11 <Bruce> I have to be close enough to smell.
03:11 <Vaylon> LOL
03:14 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods at Waldemar's suggestion. "I agree that we must be stealthy to avoid the dangers that lie ahead, and that man's men may still be looking for us, as insane as that would be."
03:14 <Vaylon> "I do hope that he goes home and stops committing evil."
03:14 <joo> The hilltop where the shrine is situated affords you a good view of the clearing where the swamp waters have pooled: they surround the island on all sides except the West, where a large rocky ridge descends into the trees. To the East, you can see now in the morning light that there are rock protruding from the water that you might be able to hop across. To the South, the forest floor is a ...
03:14 <joo> ... veritable swamp itself, and many fallen trees slow the flow of water.
03:17 <Theo> Sparrow looks between the two directions, kicking the toe of his boot of the ground, "Well I'm fed up of being wet. We'll take the rocks." he decides, making his way toward them.
03:19 <joo> Hawthorn and Waldemar, is your business here concluded? Do you follow Sparrow?
03:20 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods at Sparrow's words. "Worry not. We will end this evil." He gets up, dusts himself off, and follows Sparrow.
03:20 <Bruce> Yes.
03:21 <joo> Dysus follows you outside. Wherever her bare feet touch the ground, new growth springs up from the ground, and it spreads slowly outwards.
03:22 <joo> "Good luck, brave adventurers," she says.
03:22 <joo> As soon as you cross the threshold of the island, this music begins to play: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCp9HZQW5qY
03:23 <Theo> Sparrow nods to Dysus and turns his back, hopping neatly onto the first rock.
03:23 <Bruce> Damn it, no.
03:23 <Bruce> This ain't period! This ain't period at all!
03:24 <joo> As the channel's Bard, would you like to suggest a different track?
03:24 <Bruce> Yes, give me a moment.
03:26 <Bruce> This plays as the montage of our journey through the forest begins: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeQGo6L-kYo
03:29 <joo> Sparrow, you hop onto the rock without incident. You can reach the opposite shore safely, but the ground here is still moist and spongy.
03:29 <Bruce> Waldemar picks up some of the sponge dirt and uses it to clean himself.
03:30 <Bruce> (joke)
03:30 <joo> As the trees, tall, black and gnarled, many of the old oaks, thicken, the morning light filtering through goes less, and you find yourselves again walking in veritable twilight.
03:30 <joo> Hahah.
03:30 <Bruce> this is actually beautiful
03:31 <Vaylon> Hawthorn hopes that the trees do not misunderstand his fiery god.
03:31 <Theo> Treading carefully, Sparrow advances onward, occasionally checking over his shoulder for the others.
03:34 <joo> Sparrow, a low branch brushes your head. Then there is a creaking from all around, and the trees seem to close in on you. A branch closes around your neck, and starts lifting you into the air and choking you.
03:34 <Vaylon> D:
03:35 <joo> What do you do?!
03:35 <Theo> Sparrow clutches at the branch choking him, kicking his legs as it lifts him. Unable to get words out, he tries to reach for his sword!
03:36 <joo> It's difficult to grasp your sword while you're being strangled. How do you achieve this?
03:36 <Bruce> Do we see this?
03:36 <joo> Yes, Hawthorn and Waldemar, you can see this about 10 metres ahead of you.
03:36 <Theo> Shall I roll defy danger for that?
03:37 <Bruce> Waldemar starts sprinting toward Sparrow, holding out his axe like a madman.
03:37 <Vaylon> "Peace, forest, peace!" shouts Hawthorn, holding up his staff and free hand.
03:38 <joo> Yes, I think it's defying danger with either CON or STR, but I'm not sure which. The outcome of a partial failure would probably defend on whether it's done by enduring the strangling, or just going for the sword with force.
03:39 <joo> An angry rustling, murmuring comes from the forest, Hawthorn. The trees do not appear to heed your words; and, Waldemar, a branch whips down into your path.
03:40 <Bruce> Waldemar does not falter! He swings out to chop the branch away as he runs to help Sparrow.
03:40 <Theo> Sparrow clenches his teeth and still reaches for his sword or a throwing knife, whichever comes first...

03:40 <joo> Is that CON or STR, Theo?
03:41 <Theo> Str
03:42 <joo> Very well. You loosen your shortsword from its scabbard through sheer force of will; but the branch around your neck tightens, and spots appears in your vision. You drop the sword, and are lifted higher into the air.

03:43 <PageBot> joo: 1 -- damage to Sparrow
03:43 <joo> Heh.
03:43 <Theo>
03:44 <Vaylon> Not knowing what else to do, Hawthorn begins to mutter a prayer for Waldemar.

03:47 <Bruce> Does that ignore armor?
03:47 <joo> (This damage doesn't ignore armour, since you're in a position to defend against it.)
03:47 <Bruce> Okay.
03:47 <Theo> His vision faltering, Sparrow tries to loosen his pouch of throwing knives, hoping Waldemar or Hawthorn can get to them.
03:48 <joo> Waldemar, the branch whips you painfully, but your axe severs it. More branches from all sides come at you, but you have a chance to continue towards Sparrow.
03:48 <Vaylon> Not knowing what else to do, and appearing at quite of a bit of a loss, Hawthorn claps his hands on the top of the quarterstaff and begins to pray.

03:48 <Vaylon> That should be +1 anyway. >_>
03:48 <Vaylon> Haha.
03:49 <joo> Why +1?
03:49 <Vaylon> Due to the Bless.
03:49 <Vaylon> It should have only been 2d6+1.
03:49 <joo> Oh, yes.
03:50 <Bruce> Tree fighting music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6jC2fVb_qo
03:50 <joo> Hawthorn, the Firebringer doesn't know what the fuck to do in this situation, and you lose the spell for now.
03:50 <Vaylon> D:
03:51 <joo> Moreover, some green vines whip out of the undergrowth at your legs.
03:52 <joo> Waldemar, you come up to Sparrow just as he's offering you your inheritance of 4 throwing knives.
03:52 <Bruce> I don't need no damn knives. Waldemar shouts as he approaches Sparrow. "Unhand him, villainous tree!" He leaps forward to cut through a wide swathe of branches!
03:52 <joo> You may roll damage against the branches strangling him, if you like.

03:53 <Vaylon> D:
03:54 <joo> Waldemar, you sever the branch around Sparrow's neck, but more are still holding him, wrapping around his waist. The stump of the branch you severed flies at your face. Sparrow, you regain enough of your senses to be able to act now, although your shortsword is on the ground.
03:55 <Vaylon> Hawthorn tries to fend off the vines with his staff, struggling with them and enduring if necessary.
03:55 <joo> You're enduring them with your staff?!
03:55 <Vaylon> ... Good point.
03:55 <Bruce> Hawthorn throttles the vines with his staff.
03:55 <joo> Hahahah.
03:56 <Theo> Sparrow takes a few deep breaths, as much to gain his sight back and reaches for his longsword on his back.
03:56 <joo> You can attempt to beat off the vines with your staff before they grab your legs if you act quickly enough.
03:57 <joo> Otherwise, you'll be bound by them for now.
03:57 <Vaylon> Hawthorn will try to quickly cast a spell of light on his staff to imitate a torch to scare away the vines!
03:58 <Vaylon> I'm using INT.

04:00 <joo> Nice.
04:00 <Vaylon> Hooray!
04:01 <joo> A fierce flame bursts into existence on the end of Hawthorn's staff, casting dark shadows from the tree branches. The vines draw back uneasily from the heat and light.
04:01 <Vaylon> Well, the spell says it doesn't give off heat.
04:01 <joo> Sparrow, you unsheathe your longsword. The branches are lifting you higher into the air.
04:01 <Vaylon> It's just to deceive the vines into thinking there's a real torch.
04:02 <Bruce> The vines' eyes deceive them.
04:02 <joo> You were so Intelligent that you manage to summon a flame with heat, anyway.
04:02 <Vaylon> Awesome.
04:03 <Bruce> Man, I guess setting this place on fire would kind of annoy the forest spirit.
04:03 <Vaylon> I *am* a priest of the Firebringer, after all.
04:03 <joo> Waldemar, what will you do about the stump that's about to punch you in the face?
04:04 <Theo> Sparrow swings his sword, trying to hack at the vines holding him.
04:04 <joo> Roll Hack and Slash.
04:04 <Bruce> Waldemar grabs the stump with an open fist and rips the entire branch right out of the tree.
04:04 <Bruce> Or he tries to.

04:07 <Bruce> Yeah.
04:09 <Vaylon> "I am a servant of the Firebringer, sent here on a task by Dysus the forest spirit!" shouts Hawthorn. "We have come only to heal the forest; you will let my comrades and I pass unmolested and in peace!"
04:10 <joo> Waldemar, you take hold of the branch and try to rip it from the trunk, but it flexes, and tosses you bodily away from it. You land in some bushes some way away, and you can feel thick vines closing around your body.
04:11 <joo> Sparrow, your longsword cuts through the branches, and they drop you onto the ground just as you see Waldemar getting tossed into the air.
04:12 <joo> Unmolested? We'll see about that.
04:12 <Vaylon> Heh!
04:13 <joo> The vines touch you in places you've never been touched before, Waldemar. These vines are perverted! That is the only way to describe them!

04:17 <joo> Sparrow, you'll find that difficult to achieve, given that most of the vines are concealed by shrubbery.
04:17 <Bruce> Just throw it in the general direction. There's nothing of value over there anyway.
04:18 <Theo> XD
04:18 <joo> However, you could attempt that, with the risk of injuring Hawthorn.

04:23 <Theo> That's more Waldemar
04:26 <Vaylon> I'm using Divine Guidance.
04:28 <joo> Waldemar, you writhe and pull at the vines, flexing your muscles, and you manage to extricate your upper half. The vines around the rest of the body start pulling you further into the bush, until you disappear from Sparrow and Hawthorn's sight.

04:34 <joo> That's fitting, because he's going toupee now.
04:34 <Vaylon> Hah.
04:35 <Bruce> Waldemar uses his freed upper half to whip out a torch from his gear and quickly light it.
04:35 <Bruce> If he's going out, he's going out blazing.
04:35 <joo> (Pronounced: "he's going to pee now.")
04:35 <Vaylon> Bruce: Hah!
04:39 <joo> Hawthorn, the flame on your staff burns even brighter, until the flames run down the length of the staff entirely and consume it. In exchange for your only weapon, the Firebringer gives you a weapon even deadlier against your current enemies. The Firebringer grants you the knowledge of a fire spell usually only found in Arcane magic...
04:40 <Vaylon> (ノ◕ヮ◕し)
04:40 <Bruce> The Firebringer is going to tank the fucking spell economy at this exchange rate.
04:40 <joo> It's the thought that counts.
04:41 <Vaylon> Right. I don't always expect to be able to sacrifice, say, a healing potion or weapon or something like that. Divine Guidance seems like a move that's very context-sensitive to me.
04:42 <joo> The spell will be based on this: www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/burningHands.htm
04:42 <Vaylon> Aww, yeah.
04:42 <Bruce> The Firebringer would ask you to sacrifice Waldemar to the flames, but he's already on it.
04:42 <Vaylon> Hah!
04:43 <joo> I think it's fair to make it a 1st-level spell, and base its mechanical effect on Magic Missile.
04:43 <joo> Except its range is Close.
04:43 <Vaylon> Let's flambé.
04:44 <Bruce> Damn, Waldemar's going to have to pull some crazy shit to remain the Puncher of this group.
04:44 <Bruce> Oh... Burning Hands is not what it sounds like.
04:45 <joo> So: Burning Hands (Level 1, Evocation): A gout of searing flame shoots from your fingertips, dealing 2d4 damage to any creature in close range.
04:45 <joo> You cast it using the Cleric's usual Cast A Spell. For now, it's added to your list of prepared spells.
04:46 <Vaylon> Feeling the glory and light of his deity upon him as his only weapon and defense is sacrificed to the flames, Hawthorn looks down at his hands, lifting them and clenching them into fists. He turns to the vines and shouts, "Back, fiends! Back!"
04:46 <Vaylon> I think it's safe to say that Waldemar is no longer standing and fighting -- or is he?
04:46 <Theo> He's getting violated
04:46 <Vaylon> Ooh la la.

04:47 <joo> Sparrow, you light a torch. Mark off 1 adventuring gear. However, a branch knocks it out of your hands, and it lands on the wet ground and the flame goes out. More branches come at you.
04:47 <joo> Hahahah.
04:48 <joo> You might be able to recover the torch and relight it without using more adventuring gear, however.
04:48 <joo> Well, let's see what the result of Waldemar's action is...
04:48 <joo> He isn't literally standing, of course, but he's making some attempt to fight the vines.

05:05 <Bruce> The trees accidentally deal the extra damage they get to each other.
05:05 <joo> Waldemar, you draw unwanted attention with your singing, but you won't find out until later.
05:06 <joo> The air here is starting to get hot, and the bush is burning along nicely.
05:06 <Bruce> Waldemar is experienced in dramatic irony, so he brags about how safe he is.
05:07 <Vaylon> Hmm.
05:07 <Vaylon> So we can pass through unmolested (at least by the trees) now?
05:08 <joo> The trees that aren't on fire appear to be very agitated. You might be able to keep them at bay using the torches, however.
05:09 <joo> Presently, one of the burning branches bursts into splinters, some of which land on other branches and set them alight, too.
05:09 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says, "Gather your wits! Give me one of the torches, and let us go quickly from this place."
05:09 <Vaylon> What was the spot that Hawthorn was put into?
05:09 <joo> You're about to find out.
05:09 <Theo> Sparrow sheaths his sword and picks up a lifeless branch, lighting it on fire.
05:10 <joo> Oh, wait...
05:10 <Bruce> Typical humans. Already enslaving the new race.
05:11 <Vaylon> Heheh.
05:13 <joo> Hawthorn, your spray of fire also goes wild and sets alight a dead tree. Shortly afterwards, it breaks in the middle and it falls across your path, separating you from the others.
05:13 <Vaylon> Oh, dear.
05:15 <Vaylon> Well, then.
05:15 <Bruce> Perhaps you were meant to die among your people, Hawthorn.
05:16 <Vaylon> XD
05:17 <joo> The flames from the dead tree lick at the branch of a larger tree that it fell near, and the tree shudders, whipping its branches about.
05:18 <joo> The crackling of fire surrounds you all, and the air is uncomfortably hot now. What do you do?
05:18 <Bruce> Waldemar takes off his cloak and tries to smother enough of the fire for Hawthorn to do a stunt jump over it!
05:18 <Vaylon> Is the tree across the path small enough that I could possibly jump it?
05:18 <Theo> Sparrow spins around at the sound of the tree falling, letting out a curse. He throws the stick he was setting on fire to the ground and runs forward, picking his dropped shortsword on the way, "Hold on, Hawthorn!" he shouts, starting to hack away at the parts of the tree he can get to.
05:20 <joo> It seems remotely possible to jump over the branch, but it would be quite a feat not to get caught in the flames.
05:20 <Vaylon> Hawthorn is willing to take that chance. Maybe Sparrow's efforts will Aid him.
05:21 <Bruce> Well, if he tries to jump, I'll roll Aid with what I'm doing.
05:21 <Vaylon> Hawthorn runs and prepares to jump over the tree, raising his arms in front of himself to endure the flames.

The flames lick at Hawthorn from either side as he soars through him, but his fortitude prevents him from taking any serious burns.

05:41 <Bruce> We learned that there is an Evil in the forest that has taken hold of the warlord's tomb.
05:41 <Theo> There is a tomb in the swamp that held a warlord
05:42 <joo> I don't know if Bruce's description is quite accurate, but, yes, an evil and a warlord's tomb are certainly involved.
05:42 <Theo> It needs either sealing or cleansing

05:49 <Bruce> ...yes, what joo said.
05:49 <Vaylon> How is Hawthorn Chaotic?
05:49 <joo> He's a fire wizard.
05:50 <Vaylon> Fire doesn't have to be chaotic.
05:50 <joo> No, I'm seriously suggesting that.
05:50 <joo> ...I'm not.
05:50 <Bruce> This is quite the Lawful forest fire we started.
05:50 <Vaylon> Hey, they started it.
05:50 <Vaylon> Well, you guys can change your alignment in little ways, but it takes something big to change your alignment in big ways.
05:51 <Theo> I could agree with Sparrow being chaotic XD
05:51 <Bruce> Well, no, I mean, I think I was just wrong.
05:51 <joo> What do you think Waldemar's true alignment is?
05:52 <Bruce> I think he is Chaotic.
05:52 <joo> That sounds reasonable.
05:52 <Vaylon> What's the alignment move you're going to pick?
05:53 <Bruce> I think I kept him as Neutral because the original bard playwright I envisioned was sort of like that, but Waldemar is a different Beast entirely.
05:53 <Bruce> Probably the normal Bard move.
05:53 <Vaylon> XD
05:53 <Vaylon> You keep describing him as a Beast.
05:53 <Vaylon> We shall see who the true Beast really is.
05:53 <joo> I have no objections to that change, then. Do you think Waldemar satisfied "Spur others to significant and unplanned decisive action." in this session, out of interest?
05:54 <Bruce> It would depend on why Sparrow decided to continue, but not really, no.
05:54 <joo> I see.
05:54 <Bruce> But "significant and unplanned action" seems more his style.
05:55 <joo> Does anybody want to form or resolve any bonds? Does Sparrow perhaps have any feelings about the other two that might be strong enough for a bond?
05:55 <Vaylon> Hmm.
05:55 <Vaylon> I wonder if I should change to Lawful.
05:56 <Vaylon> "Endanger yourself following the precepts of your church or god."
05:56 <Theo> Waldemar has my back when things go wrong
05:56 <joo> Hawthorn seemed to be doing well at being a Good cleric, so far.
05:56 <Vaylon> True.
05:56 <Vaylon> Very well! I will have a slight shift in focus:
05:57 <Vaylon> "Ignore danger to aid another."
05:57 <joo> Heh. Making the condition strictly more general, I see.
05:58 <Theo> I'm going to see how it goes with the bear before I decide to switch Sparrow's alignment.
05:58 <Bruce> Sparrow stuck with us despite his pragmatic nature. I will bring out his spirit of adventure!
05:58 <Vaylon> A bit, yes. And "Ignore danger" is different from "Endager yourself."
05:58 <joo> Is it?!
05:58 <Vaylon> Yes.
05:58 <Vaylon> *Endanger
05:58 <Bruce> Be careful with those throwing knives, Sparrow, you might endagger yourself.
05:58 <joo> Endagger yourself.
05:58 <Vaylon> LOL
05:58 <Bruce> 2 l8
05:58 <joo> Hahahah.
05:58 <Theo> XD
05:58 <Bruce> Theo, do you approve of my bond?
05:59 <Theo> Yes. Do you approve of mine?
05:59 <Bruce> Oh, yeah.
05:59 <joo> Okay, well ignoring danger seems to entail endangering yourself in this context. You can endanger yourself without ignoring danger, so this also makes it more general.
05:59 <Vaylon> True.
05:59 <Vaylon> But ignoring danger is not the same as putting yourself into danger.
06:00 <Bruce> Jesus, it's already 10 PM?
06:00 <Theo> Endanger yourself means put yourself deliberately in the path of danger.
06:00 <Vaylon> Right. Not quite the same as ignoring danger.
06:00 <Theo> Ignoring it means it could or couldn't happen
06:01 <Bruce> Maybe I went with Neutral subconsciously because Chaotic Bards are too mainstream around here.
06:01 <Vaylon> XD
06:02 <joo> Is there an example of an act that would satisfy "Endanger yourself to heal another" but wouldn't satisfy "Ignore danger to aid another?"
06:02 <Vaylon> Hmm.
06:02 <joo> Er, I mean... the converse.
06:03 <joo> No, I don't.
06:03 <Vaylon> I don't know.
06:03 <Vaylon> Does that mean I can't change my alignment?
06:04 <Vaylon> Also, Theo, I wish to resolve this bond with Sparrow since he's now accompanying us: "Sparrow's quick thinking and acting came in handy. I'll have to persuade him to continue accompanying us."
06:04 <joo> Not necessarily, but if it's just changing it to a more inclusive condition, then it seems to be more a question of the current move being too narrow, rather than a shift of focus.
06:04 <joo> What would the shift be?
06:05 <Theo> Yeah okay Vaylon.
06:05 <Vaylon> The shift, joo, is that Hawthorn is no longer simply focusing on healing people but also going into battle beside people in order to help them.
06:06 <Vaylon> Such as sacrificing his weapon to receive aid.
06:07 <joo> That's an acceptable fictional explanation for the change, and given that "ignore danger to aid another" is in the book, I can't argue against its use.
06:08 <Vaylon> I will replace my bond with this one: "Waldemar has a way with talking to people. I should learn to rely on him when it comes to dealing with others."
06:08 <joo> Ah, yes. You saw how he smooth-talked that forest spirit.
06:08 <Vaylon> XD
06:08 <Vaylon> Yes!
06:09 <Vaylon> Bruce, do you approve?
06:09 <Bruce> Yes.
06:09 <Theo> I should have poked Hawthorn to ask for what Sparrow wanted
06:09 <joo> I'm sure he'll let you sniff the hair, too.
06:10 <Theo> LOL!
06:10 <Vaylon> XD
06:10 <joo> Actually, he might just give it to you. After those vines, something so simple might not satisfy him any more.
06:10 <Bruce> Hawthorn and Waldemar: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPdwDoLYp3Q
06:11 <Vaylon> Hah!
06:11 <joo> And you're keeping "Waldemar is a good person; I trust him implicitly."?
06:13 <Vaylon> Right.
06:13 <Vaylon> I'll have to think about more bonds with Sparrow.
06:14 <Bruce> That video is also a Textbook demonstration of defy danger with CHA.
06:16 <joo> Then Waldemar gains 1+2=3 XP (and can level up at the next opportunity), Sparrow gains 2+2=4 XP, and Hawthorn gains 1+2+2=5 XP. They respectively have 9/8, 8/9 and 6/9 XP.
06:17 <joo> At the next session, those alignment changes can be effected, if you still think they're good ideas.

03:55 <Vaylon> Hawthorn tries to fend off the vines with his staff, struggling with them and enduring if necessary.
03:55 <joo> You're enduring them with your staff?!

04:46 <Vaylon> Feeling the glory and light of his deity upon him as his only weapon and defense is sacrificed to the flames, Hawthorn looks down at his hands, lifting them and clenching them into fists. He turns to the vines and shouts, "Back, fiends! Back!"

05:18 <Bruce> Waldemar takes off his cloak and tries to smother enough of the fire for Hawthorn to do a stunt jump over it!

05:35 <Theo> "Fucking run!" Sparrow yells, hopping over branches and roots with ease.
05:35 <Theo> I'm all for suspense
05:36 <Theo> After we find out what kind of wolf or cat is stalking us
05:36 <joo> The pounding footsteps grow closer yet, and to your left, you can just see a pair of burning red eyes...
05:38 <joo> It is separated from you by trees, but presently you come into a small clearing. The owner of the eyes overtakes you, and out into the clear leaps... a massive black bear with red smoking eyes!
05:38 <Theo> Aww I was wrong
05:38 <joo> It lets out an ear-splitting roar and paws at the ground, spraying dirt everywhere. It has long black claws at the ends of its huge limbs.
05:39 <joo> We'll continue this adventure next time.
05:39 <Theo> Sparrow skids to a halt, looking at the bear and pulling his hood down, "Oh shit..." he mutters...
05:40 <joo> !r missed-rolls
05:40 <PageBot> joo: Error: No dice rolls or choices specified. See !help roll 2 for correct usage.
05:40 <joo> ...
05:40 <joo> !missed-rolls
05:40 <PageBot> Missed rolls (estimated): Theo: 2 of 7, Vaylon: 1 of 7, Bruce: 1 of 6. Full list: <http://pastebin.com/HKMbJqfV>.
05:40 <Vaylon> "Oh, dear," says Hawthorn.
05:40 <Bruce> Waldemar is the only bear around here.
05:40 <joo> Did you learn anything new and important about the world?
05:41 <Theo> Trees hurt?
05:41 <Bruce> We learned that there is an Evil in the forest that has taken hold of the warlord's tomb.
05:41 <Theo> There is a tomb in the swamp that held a warlord
05:42 <joo> I don't know if Bruce's description is quite accurate, but, yes, an evil and a warlord's tomb are certainly involved.
05:42 <Theo> It needs either sealing or cleansing
05:42 <Vaylon> Yeah.
05:42 <Bruce> Waldemar doesn't have time for these details.
05:43 <joo> Did you overcome a notable monster or enemy?
05:44 <Theo> I wouldn't really call the trees notable. That bear will be though.
05:44 <joo> Yes, and perhaps that bear will be the one getting the XP; so nothing for now.
05:45 <joo> Did we loot a memorable treasure?
05:45 <Theo> Nope
05:45 <Theo> Oh...
05:45 <Theo> Goddess hair
05:45 <Vaylon> XD
05:45 <Theo> XD
05:46 <joo> I'm sure Waldemar will remember that, at least.
05:46 <joo> Then he'll remind everyone of it when he write an epic ballad about Dysus' hair.
05:47 <Theo> Sparrow should have totally asked for what he wanted XD
05:47 <joo> Maybe she'll feel grateful enough to do that when you return victorious from the tomb.
05:47 <joo> I'd say the hair does count!
05:48 <joo> So that's 2 session XP.
05:48 <joo> Who satisfied their alignment move?
05:48 <Theo> Not me XD
05:48 <joo> Heh.
05:48 <Vaylon> I don't think I healed anyone in this session.
05:48 <Theo> Sparrow was strangled for goodness sake XD
05:48 <Bruce> Not I!
05:49 <joo> There was some self-discovery, this session. All of you are actually Chaotic, and Hawthorn is a pyromancer.
05:49 <Bruce> I'm afraid that I was Horribly Wrong about Waldemar's alignment.
05:49 <Vaylon> Oh?
05:49 <Vaylon> XD
05:49 <Theo> XD
