A Beast is Slain
12 July 2015
04:28 <joo> Your characters were running away from the scene of your Crime, where you set fire to several trees.
04:28 <Bruce> Self defense.
04:29 <joo> However, your antics had also drawn the attention of a massive demonic-looking bear, who apprehended you in a clearing, presumably to make a citizen's arrest.
04:29 <joo> The bear regards you with angry, red burning eyes, paws the ground, and lets out an ear-splitting roar.
04:29 <joo> What do you do?
04:30 <Bruce> (Waldemar takes a can of bear spray out of his adventuring gear.)
04:30 <Bruce> My HP is at 14, right?
04:30 <joo> Yes. ANd Sparrow is at 18/19, and Hawthorn at 20/21.
04:31 <Vaylon> What can Hawthorn discern about this demonic bear?
04:31 <Vaylon> He will determine if it is a creature that he is familiar with from his studies.
04:32 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+2 Spout Lore
04:32 <PageBot> Vaylon: 9=3+4(+2) Spout Lore
04:34 <joo> You've never heard of a creature like this before. While it certainly holds a resemblance to the brown bears known to live in this forest, it is about 2 times larger than you'd expect, and its matted and black fur and glowing red eyes betray something supernatural about it whose cause you cannot discern.
04:35 <joo> Heh. Hawthorn: "i don't think this is a normal bear, guys"
04:37 <Vaylon> "Most unusual," mutters Hawthorn.
04:37 <joo> You've heard cautionary tales of mundane creatures becoming infected by unchecked evil welling up from the land itself when left too long alone.
04:38 <Bruce> Hmm...
04:39 <joo> While you're pondering this, Hawthorn, the bear lumbers forward, rising onto its hind legs, and swipes a tree-trunk-like paw at you!
04:39 <joo> What are Waldemar and Sparrow doing?
04:40 <Bruce> Waldemar was going to Distract the bear, but since it's about to Melee Hawthorn, he will inspire his homie with a battle song in the giants' tongue!
04:41 <Theo> Seeing the bear, Sparrow draws his shortsword and dagger, ducking behind the trees in an attempt to get a surprise attack in.
04:41 <Bruce> !r 2d6+1 Arcane Art
04:41 <PageBot> Bruce: 11=6+4(+1) Arcane Art
04:41 <joo> Ahh, good excuse, Sparrow. (You'll never see him again.)
04:41 <Bruce> I grant Hawthorn +1d4 damage forward.
04:41 <Theo>
04:42 <joo> Very good! By the way, what kind of singing voice does Waldemar have?
04:42 <Bruce> He is a big bass beast, obviously.
04:42 <joo> Sparrow, the bear doesn't seem to notice you while you're doing this, so intent is it on its prey.
04:43 <Theo> Nah a beautiful soprano!
04:43 <Vaylon> I don't have a weapon.
04:43 <Theo> I shall combine Cheap Shot with my Backstab
04:43 <joo> You'll have to fight it with your...
04:44 * joo puts on sunglasses.
04:44 <Theo> !r d8+d6
04:44 <PageBot> Theo: 6+5
04:44 <joo> Bear hands.
04:44 <Theo> ...
04:44 <Vaylon> Hahaha.
04:44 <Bruce> Which are on fire.
04:44 <Vaylon> I think I lost the spell, didn't I?
04:44 <joo> Sparrow, you certainly can do that, but we'll see what happens with the immediate fight before that takes effect.
04:45 <Theo> Well there is my roll ^_^
04:45 <joo> No, you still have the spell, as far as I can see. The last time you cast it, you opted to put yourself in a spot.
04:45 <joo> I have these prepared spells written down for Hawthorn: Prepared: Bless, Detect Magic, Speak With Dead, Burning Hands
04:46 <joo> Er... but Bless was revoked.
04:47 <joo> Sparrow has buggered off, and Waldemar is just standing there and singing at you, so it looks like it's up to you to handle this Bear.
04:47 <Bruce> Hey, it's a beautiful performance.
04:47 <joo> Yes. Waldemar is Bearing his heart.
04:48 <Bruce> youd better stop that right now u cheeky kunt
04:48 <Vaylon> I do? Hmm.
04:49 <Vaylon> Hawthorn offers up a prayer to his god and remains before the bear!
04:49 * Theo watches Sparrow ignore the bear altogether and go hunting for the GM
04:49 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+2 Cast a Spell: Burning Hands
04:49 <PageBot> Vaylon: 9=2+5(+2) Cast a Spell: Burning Hands
04:49 <Bruce> this bear is getting fucking owned.
04:49 <joo> Hahaha.
04:50 <Vaylon> Hawthorn will take -1 ongoing to Cast a Spell.
04:50 <Vaylon> !r 3d4 Fire Damage
04:50 <PageBot> Vaylon: 5=2+1+2 Fire Damage
04:50 <Bruce> How slightly below average.
04:51 <joo> What will you do about the bear's attack?
04:53 <Vaylon> Do I even have time to do anything before it attacks me? I'm concentrating on the spell.
04:53 <joo> Hmm...
04:53 <Vaylon> Hawthorn will do his best to simply weather the blow.
04:53 <joo> You can try Defy Danger with CON, but of course the consequences of complete failure might be worse than just taking the damage.
04:54 <Vaylon> All right! Let's see how bad a dude Hawthorn is.
04:54 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+1 Defy Danger (CON)
04:54 <PageBot> Vaylon: 6=3+2(+1) Defy Danger (CON)
04:54 <joo> Hahah.
04:54 <Vaylon> Pretty bad, apparently.
04:54 <Wren> haha
04:54 * Wren lurks
04:55 <joo> Hawthorn, the Bear's paws come down on you, just as your hands burst into flame. Instinctively, you grasp its paws to try and hold it back... but the flame spreads along the bear's fur, and it seems to become enraged!
04:55 <joo> I mean... even more enraged.
04:56 <joo> The bear frees a paw from its grip, and swipes at your torso in a mighty arc...
04:57 <joo> !r d10+2 -- damage to Hawthorn
04:57 <PageBot> joo: 5=3(+2) -- damage to Hawthorn
04:59 <Vaylon> Hawthorn staggers back, crying out in pain at the blow.
04:59 <joo> Sparrow is attacking the bear from behind with his dagger, right?
04:59 <Theo> Yup
05:00 <joo> Very well. To effectively use the dagger, you have to get quite close, and you can certainly smell the odour of this bear.
05:01 <Theo> Eew
05:01 <Bruce> *singing nervously*
05:01 <joo> Your dagger sticks deep into its back, and the bear roars again, in anger and pain. The fire also spreads over it almost completely, so that you're in danger of getting burnt, Sparrow!
05:03 <Theo> Sparrow curses and tries to get away from the fire, putting his boot on the bear's back and pushing away
05:03 <joo> That sounds like you're defying danger with STR.
05:04 <Vaylon> He could just abandon the dagger, right?
05:04 <Theo> Yup! Either that or DEX. Was trying to work out which XD
05:05 <Vaylon> It sounds to me like if he just abandoned the dagger in the bear's back, he wouldn't have to defy danger.
05:05 <joo> Yes, he could just abandon the dagger, too, probably with no roll.
05:05 <Theo> But my dagger ;_;
05:06 <joo> You don't want poor Juliette to burn to death.
05:06 <Bruce> Don't listen to Vaylon, he is notoriously careless with his daggers.
05:06 <Vaylon> Hahaha.
05:06 <Bruce> Just throwing them around everywhere and leaving them with hobbits.
05:06 <Vaylon> LOL
05:06 <joo> Heh.
05:06 <Theo> !r 2d6+1 (DD+STR)
05:06 <Vaylon> I forgot about that.
05:06 <PageBot> Theo: 6=4+1(+1) (DD+STR)
05:06 <Vaylon> Wow, PageBot.
05:06 <Theo> Aww
05:06 <joo> Heh. This is getting Interesting.
05:07 <Vaylon> Here it comes! TPK!
05:07 <joo> !r 2d4 -- Fire damage to Sparrow (ignores armour)
05:07 <PageBot> joo: 4=1+3 -- Fire damage to Sparrow (ignores armour)
05:07 <Bruce> Waldemar considers trading his companions over to the bear to make peace with it.
05:07 <joo> You're still in disgustingly good health, though.
05:09 <Bruce> Waldemar will soothe Sparrow's pain with his thunderous voice.
05:09 <joo> Sparrow, you manage to extricate your blade, but the fire, which now completely surrounds the bear, burns you harshly. The bear turns around to face you. Smoke is now streaming up from in in a thick pillar, and its features seem distorted.
05:09 <Bruce> !r 2d6+1 Arcane Art
05:09 <PageBot> Bruce: 9=6+2(+1) Arcane Art
05:09 <Bruce> !r d8 Healing Sparrow
05:09 <joo> The bear stalks forward, intent on Sparrow, leaving deep, ashy footprints in the wet forest floor.
05:09 <PageBot> Bruce: 6 Healing Sparrow
05:09 <Theo> <3
05:10 <Bruce> I probably healed the bear, too. This is advantageous for Waldemar, who can claim he was totally trying to help the bear out the whole time, and join his party.
05:10 <Theo> Sparrow backs away slowly from the bear, blades in both hands as it waits for it's move.
05:11 <joo> Waldemar, your powerful Bass echoes in the forest, and all in hearing are affected by the ancient magic in its words, including the bear, who bursts into renewed flame.
05:11 <joo> Everybody is healed by 6 HP.
05:12 <Bruce> I don't discriminate. That's just how I am.
05:12 <joo> Hawthorn and Waldemar, you feel it getting a bit warmer behind your backs.
05:13 <Bruce> Sounds like they heard the Bass pumping.
05:13 <Vaylon> Huh...
05:13 <joo> The bear bounds at you, Sparrow, its shining black claws outstretched, and its maw wide open. The flame roars, so you're unsure whether it's the bear's voice or not.
05:15 <Bruce> Waldemar...... glances behind himself.
05:15 <Theo> Sparrow waits for the right moment to duck away from the bear to avoid it.
05:16 <joo> Waldemar, you see the forest fire from earlier is spreading viciously, and had almost reached this clearing. A crackling and popping comes from the branches being consumed by the flame, and you fancy you can almost hear a mournful voice on the warm air.
05:16 <Theo> !r 2d6+2 (DD+DEX)
05:16 <PageBot> Theo: 8=4+2(+2) (DD+DEX)
05:18 <Bruce> (Waldemar perceives the approaching flames as the GM's attempt at railroading, and jumps directly into them in protest.)
05:18 <joo> Waldemar dies instantly for talking shit about the GM.
05:18 <Bruce> Damm.
05:19 * Wren giggles
05:19 <Vaylon> Taking a breath to steady himself after finding his wounds restored, Hawthorn grabs Waldemar and says, "Waldemar, come!" Taking some of the holy water from his precious scarce rations, he thrusts one flask of it into Waldemar's hands, taking one for himself, and he begins to sprinkle a wide circle on the ground around the bear.
05:21 <joo> Sparrow you manage to leap out of the way of the bear just as it comes down on the spot where you were standing, but it the impact of its landing causes the ground to quake, and knocks you off your feet. The bear stalks towards you still.
05:22 <joo> What does Hawthorn hope the effect of this will be?
05:22 <Vaylon> Well, if the bear demonic, this might temporarily trap it in place, allowing us to escape.
05:22 <Vaylon> *is demonic
05:23 <Bruce> Waldemar has Faith in Hawthorn ever since he randomly started shooting flames from his hands, so he helps complete this demented holy circle.
05:25 <Vaylon> This sounds like a good time to tell me the requirements or consequences and ask.
05:25 <joo> That sounds reasonable, but if it's true, it's also something that would need some Quick Thinking.
05:26 <Vaylon> All right.
05:26 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+2 Defy Danger (INT)
05:26 <PageBot> Vaylon: 10=3+5(+2) Defy Danger (INT)
05:26 <joo> Are you also going to enclose Sparrow in this circle? You'll probably trap him too, since he's so Sinful.
05:26 <Vaylon> Sparrow's not demonic, so far as I know.
05:27 <Bruce> That would at least buy us some time.
05:27 <Vaylon> Hah!
05:27 <Vaylon> Hear that, Theo? Bruce is ready to sacrifice you for the Greater Good.
05:28 <Theo>
05:29 <Theo> Sparrow turns to his back, pushing away with his feet as the bear looms over him again, switching his shortsword and dagger for his longsword.
05:30 <joo> Sparrow dies, but Waldemar and Hawthorn become famous for inventing a new sport.
05:30 <joo> You can roll Hack and Slash, if that's what you're doing, Sparrow.
05:30 <joo> Ah, yes, also Hawthorn and Waldemar each use 1 ration.
05:31 <Bruce> Waldemar was just using normal water, hoping it would get infected by the other water's holiness.
05:31 <Vaylon> No -- Hawthorn gave Waldemar some water from his own rations.
05:31 <Theo> !r d26+1 (H+S)
05:31 <PageBot> Theo: 27=26(+1) (H+S)
05:32 <Vaylon> I believe it was only Hawthorn's rations which were purified.
05:32 <Theo> Oops!
05:32 <joo> Then Hawthorn uses 2 rations.
05:32 <Bruce> sick roll m8
05:32 <Vaylon> Okay.
05:32 <joo> LOL
05:32 <Vaylon> Haha.
05:32 <Theo> !r 2d6+1 (H&S)
05:32 <PageBot> Theo: 9=5+3(+1) (H&S)
05:33 <Theo> Took my a moment to realise what I'd done. I was about to blame PageBot
05:33 <joo> It was a fat roll, though.
05:33 <joo> Roll your damage!~
05:34 <joo> !r d10+2 -- Fire damage to Sparrow (ignores armour)
05:34 <PageBot> joo: 8=6(+2) -- Fire damage to Sparrow (ignores armour)
05:34 <Theo> !r d8
05:34 <PageBot> Theo: 7
05:36 <joo> Sparrow, your longsword pierces deeply into the bear's chest as it comes down on you, dealing mortal blow; but in its last throes of death, it grabs you in its mouth, biting down hard, and tosses you against a nearby tree.
05:37 <Theo> Sparrow groans as he hits the tree, dazed and winded.
05:37 <joo> The fire around the bear suddenly rages with renewed vigour as all of its flesh falls into a bubbling pool on the ground, leaving just a blackened skeleton, which stands there for a moment before it too collapses into a pile of ash.
05:37 <Vaylon> Gross.
05:38 <Vaylon> Very cinematic, though.
05:38 <joo> A convocation of writhing worms spills out of the remains and spread outward, until they reach the circle of holy water, and sizzle and smoke, going no further.
05:38 * Wren ewws
05:39 <Vaylon> Hawthorn rushes to Sparrows side, reaching for his hand.
05:39 <joo> Among the bear's remains you can also see some glints of metal; but the forest fire around you is getting more intense, and soon it might surround you again!
05:39 <Vaylon> He mutters a prayer under his breath for his battered comrade.
05:39 <Bruce> Let's bounce off to the tomb!
05:39 <Bruce> Oh, wait, metal?
05:40 <Bruce> Waldemar will dig around in those ashes.
05:40 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+1 Cast a Spell: Cure Light Wounds
05:40 <PageBot> Vaylon: 11=4+6(+1) Cast a Spell: Cure Light Wounds
05:40 <Vaylon> !r 1d8 Healing for Sparrow
05:40 <PageBot> Vaylon: 7 Healing for Sparrow
05:41 <joo> Did Hawthorn prepare Cure Light Wounds?
05:41 <Vaylon> He has First Aid.
05:41 <joo> Oh, yes.
05:43 <joo> Waldemar, some worms writhe around your feet, but they don't seem capable of doing you harm. The smell from the bear's remains is awful, though. You fish out a sword, a dagger, a shirt of chain-mail torn in parts, and a broadsword with a green opal decorating its hilt.
05:44 <joo> These items all have the weight of the standard items.
05:44 <joo> If you had studied anatomy, you'd probably also identify some human bones among the remains.
05:44 <Bruce> Waldemar loots that fat broadsword.
05:46 <Theo> Sparrow pushes himself up, coughing a few times and nodding thanks to Hawthorn, picking his sword up and sheathing it.
05:46 <joo> Very well! The sword shines and has a good edge, despite having been in a bear's stomach.
05:47 <Bruce> "It was a brave warrior who wielded this blade against the demon in their final moments -- I shall avenge them by using it to cleanse this land!" Waldemar says as he examines the sword.
05:47 <joo> A small burning tree branch falls over into the clearing, smoking as it hits the circle of holy water.
05:48 <Bruce> He only now seems to notice that he is about to be set on fire. "Let us make our way to the tomb!"
05:48 <Vaylon> Hawthorn glances at the burning forest quickly encroaching. He nods at Waldemar. "It is time to leave."
05:48 <joo> I just realised I mentioned the sword twice when I was listing those items; but there was only one. This wasn't some demented DW character with 3 swords.
05:49 <Bruce> joo: it's close, +1 damage, 15 coins, 2 weight?
05:49 * Vaylon coughs.
05:50 <joo> The sword is 2 weight, but you'll find out its effects when either someone knowledgable examines it or you use it in battle.
05:50 <Bruce> Okay.
05:51 <Vaylon> I wonder what's the most weapons I've had on me at once. Five?
05:51 * Bruce writes down "2 weight, magic".
05:51 <joo> Heh.
05:51 <Vaylon> I mean individually different weapons.
05:51 <joo> To prove a point, I'm going to later reveal that it's just a mundane broadsword.
05:52 <Theo> Sparrow nods at the pair and starts heading down the path again.
05:52 <Bruce> Waldemar will believe it's magic until it's true.
05:52 <Vaylon> Anyway -- Hawthorn beckons to Sparrow and Hawthorn, and we get the fuck out of there.
05:52 <Bruce> Also, I'm packing like five weapons already.
05:53 <Vaylon> Is that including your book?
05:53 <joo> Theo, how tired are you? This would be a good place to stop, perhaps.
05:53 <Bruce> Nope.
05:53 <Bruce> I have a bow, a dagger, an axe, some brass knuckles, and this broadsword.
05:53 <Theo> Please joo
05:53 <Vaylon> Damn.
05:54 <joo> Sparrow also has a dagger, a shortsword, a longsword, throwing knifes, and a belt knife.
05:54 <Theo>
05:54 <joo> Very well!
05:54 <joo> !missed-rolls
05:54 <PageBot> Missed rolls (estimated): Bruce: 0 of 2, Vaylon: 1 of 5, Theo: 1 of 3. Full list: <http://pastebin.com/bNuDE4tL>.
05:54 <Bruce> Once I level up, I can count my voice.
05:54 <joo> Heh.
05:55 <joo> Waldemar maintains his Streak.
05:55 <Bruce> I have to brb real quick, but Continue.
05:55 <joo> Did you learn something new and important about the world?
05:56 <Theo> Not really
05:56 <joo> Not that I can think of. Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy? Perhaps.
05:57 <joo> Do your characters consider the bear to be Notable? I suppose that's what is important.
05:57 <Theo> It was an awesome creature, but we took it down quite quickly with good rolls.
05:57 <Theo> Currently I would say it was notable because it was alone and we've never come across one.
05:59 <joo> I'd accept that.
05:59 <joo> Did you loot a memorable treasure? I think you did. I'll pre-emptively grant XP for that, too.
06:00 <joo> Who believes that they satisfied their alignment? I think Sparrow and Hawthorn may have.
06:01 <Theo> I think Sparrow has
06:01 <Vaylon> Hmmm...
06:01 <Vaylon> I don't think Hawthorn put himself in danger to heal Sparrow.
06:01 <joo> Hmm...
06:01 <joo> I suppose not.
06:02 <joo> Are there any bonds to resolve or form?
06:04 <Vaylon> Yes, I want to form a bond.
06:04 <Vaylon> Sparrow is reckless and often takes many risks; I will have to keep a closer eye on him.
06:05 <joo> Heh.
06:05 <Vaylon> Damn reckless thieves!
06:05 <Vaylon> >_>
06:05 <joo> What did he do that was so reckless?
06:05 <Vaylon> You mean besides jumping on the bear's back, then trying to get his stuck dagger back out?
06:05 <Theo> I should resolve a bond
06:05 <Bruce> Waldemar always packs heat; his mouth needs a pat down.
06:06 <Theo> Waldemar has my back when things go wrong.
06:06 <Vaylon> Theo, you approve of that bond?
06:06 <Bruce> I'll agree to that bond.
06:06 <Theo> I agree to it XD
06:06 <joo> That's fairly reckless, but it doesn't compare to just standing there while people shoot arrow at you or a bear attacks you.
06:06 <Vaylon> I suppose.
06:07 <Vaylon> No, no -- that's not recklessness.
06:07 <Bruce> But Sparrow doesn't have God on his side.
06:07 <Vaylon> That's being resolute.
06:07 <Bruce> It's Faith.
06:07 <Bruce> o.
06:07 <joo> If you say so.
06:07 <Vaylon> Theo: Sparrow doesn't think that Waldemar has his back anymore, or have they gone past that?
06:07 <Vaylon> Taken their relationship to the Next Level?
06:08 <Bruce> Oh, I thought she was writing that bond, not resolving it.
06:08 <Vaylon> Oh. She said resolve it.
06:08 <Vaylon> I'm confused, now.
06:09 <joo> Does Waldemar have a draft of his Ballad, yet?
06:09 <Vaylon> With all those weapons, Waldemar is sort of like the Switzerland of the party.
06:09 <joo> Heh.
06:09 <Bruce> Waldemar hasn't had time to write shit!
06:10 <joo> Also with the yodeling.
06:10 <Vaylon> XD
06:10 <Vaylon> And the high mountains with lakes from whence he came.
06:10 <Vaylon> ... Huh.
06:10 <joo> But he's apparently German.
06:11 <Bruce> He didn't know his father, though.
06:11 <joo> Maybe the Switzerland of this campaign is nearby.
06:11 <Vaylon> They speak German in Switzerland.
06:12 <joo> The theme music of the next session: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7O91GDWGPU
06:12 <Vaylon> Ah, just the music I want to hear when escaping from a burning forest.
06:12 <Theo>
06:12 <joo> What of the bond, then? Are you going to resolve it, Theo?
06:13 <Theo> Nah I'll keep it actually
06:15 <joo> In that case Waldemar gains 2 XP, Sparrow gains 4, and Hawthorn gains 3, leaving them at 11/9, 12/9, and 9/9 XP, respectively.
06:15 <Bruce> 11/8*
06:15 <joo> Er... 11/8 for Waldemar, rather.

Hmm.

05:05 <Theo> But my dagger ;_;
05:06 <joo> You don't want poor Juliette to burn to death.
05:06 <Bruce> Don't listen to Vaylon, he is notoriously careless with his daggers.

05:29 <Theo> Sparrow turns to his back, pushing away with his feet as the bear looms over him again, switching his shortsword and dagger for his longsword.

06:09 <Bruce> Waldemar hasn't had time to write shit!
06:10 <joo> Also with the yodeling.
06:10 <Vaylon> XD

06:10 <Vaylon> ... Huh.
06:10 <joo> But he's apparently German.
06:11 <Bruce> He didn't know his father, though.

06:15 <joo> Er... 11/8 for Waldemar, rather.
