Session 8
The Tomb of Owtheus
6 October 2015
01:32 <joo> In the previous session:
01:32 <joo> <Vaylon> Hawthorn bids Peony farewell with his blessings, and he frowns at the foreboding swamp, saying a prayer under his breath for their hopeful way.
01:32 <joo> <joo> A flame appears to you, Hawthorn, pointing to the east and south.
01:32 <joo> <joo> It looks like going in this direction will take you south of the tomb itself, but it's not often that the direct route is the best in these treacherous swamps.
01:32 <Vaylon> Hmm.
01:33 <joo> !missed-rolls
01:33 <PageBot> Missed rolls (estimated): joo: 0 of 1.
01:33 <joo> Ah, before we begin: did you have any bonds to add or remove for the last session, Vaylon?
01:34 <Vaylon> No, I don't.
01:34 <joo> Then Hawthorn gained 2 XP from the last session, which should put him at 3/10.
01:35 <Vaylon> Well, the spell says that "symbol of your deity appears before you and gestures towards the direction or course of action your deity would have you take then disappears."
01:35 <Vaylon> It stands to reason that even if directly southeast isn't the optimal way to go, that's the way that the Firebringer wants me to go.
01:36 <Vaylon> And who am I to question god?!
01:36 <joo> Indeed.
01:37 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods at the symbol of fire. "The Firebringer has shown us the way to the tomb. Let us go forth."
01:37 <joo> I'm not sure whether it makes sense for the other people to see the symbol. It's a bit cheesy for a flame to just appear out of nowhere, honestly, so I might say that only he sees it.
01:38 <Bruce> Waldemar fiddles with his moustache and nods. "Lead on, then!"
01:38 <Vaylon> It's magic, though.
01:38 <Vaylon> Now they're just going to think Hawthorn is a crazy old man.
01:38 <joo> If you prefer, you can say that Hawthorn holds out his palm, causing a flame to appear there, and the flame leans to the south-east.
01:38 <Vaylon> Yeah, okay, that works.
01:38 <Bruce> But then it turns out it was just the wind.
01:38 <joo> Hahaha.
01:39 <joo> Peony raises her eyebrows at this, but doesn't say anything more, and heads back into the forest.
01:42 <joo> If you head in the direction that the flame pointed, you soon come to the top of a hill where the last trees stand defiantly. The fog is not as thick as it was before, and the whole swamp stretches out before you almost to the horizon. To your right, the land grows greener and more rocky; to the left, you can see in the distance the place where you did battle with the bird-people.
01:43 <joo> Continuing in the direction you're going, there is a series of ridges that roughly follow your path and shadow it on the left.
01:44 <joo> This is not a perilous journey, but it will take you until dark to go this way, so mark off 1 ration each.
01:44 <Bruce> I am rich in Food these days, so I don't even CARE.
01:45 <joo> As you pass over the land, you notice some interesting things:
01:45 * Bruce gets the custom move, Bulking: Whenever you mark off rations, you may mark off a second ration to take +1 STR ongoing.
01:46 <joo> You hear a very distant thudding as of a large beast's footfalls, to the North, at one point, and some cries as of bird people are also carried to you on the wind.
01:47 <Theo> Sparrow mutters under his breath, drawing his sword at the sounds of the footfalls as he follows.
01:47 <Vaylon> Hahaha.
01:47 <joo> Also, at one point, you have to cross over a stream that trickles down from the ridge to your left, and then cuts down into the rocky hills that bar the South. If you peer down its course, you see that it seems to offer an easy way to traverse them.
01:48 <joo> No avians come to molest you, however, perhaps because this path hides you so well.
01:50 <Vaylon> Hm... we don't have a boat, though.
01:50 <joo> An hour or so after the sun sets, there is a gentle incline to the North, beyond which a large vaguely pyramidal stone structure protrudes from the ground. It looks partly natural and partly made from massive slabs of stone. It is not a type of stone you have seen much of in this locality, so you can't imagine how they must have been brought here.
01:51 <joo> The stream is small enough that a boat would not be useful.
01:51 <Theo> Giants
01:51 <Vaylon> Oh, I get it.
01:51 <joo> Standing atop this structure is a dark humanoid figure, flapping in the wind.
01:52 <joo> This seems to be the location of the tomb you seek. What do you do?
01:53 <Bruce> Flapping?!
01:53 <Theo> I am picturing a man stood flapping his arms
01:53 <joo> LOL
01:53 <Bruce> You'll have to elaborate on the flapping.
01:53 <Vaylon> Quack, quack!
01:53 <joo> The figure seems to be wearing a cloak that is flapping in the wind.
01:54 <Vaylon> I see.
01:55 <Vaylon> How far up is the figure? Within shouting distance, or a bit closer?
01:55 <Bruce> How Large is this figure?
01:56 <Vaylon> I mean... technically, someone right next to you is within shouting distance.
01:56 <joo> You could probably shoot it with a longbow, but it's not quite in shouting distance.
01:56 <joo> The figure appears to be the size of a normal human.
01:57 <Bruce> Waldemar's shouting distance could probably do it, but maybe let's not.
01:57 <joo> Hahaha.
01:57 <joo> Yes, perhaps.
01:57 <Vaylon> Hawthorn approaches the tomb, then, and raises a hand to silently hail the figure.
01:57 <joo> I'm going to write a compendium class for Yodeling.
01:57 <Vaylon> Haha.
01:57 <Vaylon> Is a yodel louder than a shot?
01:57 <Vaylon> *shout?
01:57 <joo> I don't know, but yodelling is designed to carry over long distances.
01:58 <Bruce> [Racist] It was first used by dirty Mountain People to communicate with different Mountains.
01:59 <joo> As you approach the tomb, you can see that it is mired in swamp waters, and it bears several large cracks in its masonry, and signs of collapse.
01:59 <joo> The figure on top turns to look down at you, Hawthorn, and you see that it's Ira!
02:00 <Vaylon> Oh. That's good, right?
02:00 <joo> She holds out her staff and leaps down to you, gliding impossibly gently through the air then lands softly. "You're late!"
02:00 <Bruce> Fucking witches.
02:01 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says to Ira, apologetically, "We took the most direct route we could."
02:01 <joo> Hahaha.
02:02 <joo> Ira nods, looking over all of you. "But I see you are all still alive, which is promising." She turns her head to the tomb. "The dead are sleeping, for now. If you are careful, you might avoid waking them for a time."
02:04 <joo> She whispers an arcane word, and the tip of her staff glows with a subtle silver. She points to what looks like a thin vent carved into the side of the structure, just large enough to let a human in. "That is the way I went in."
02:05 <Bruce> Waldemar scratches his chin and looks over the large structure. Does he know anything about who was entombed here?
02:05 <joo> Good question.
02:05 <Vaylon> Are there any signs or sigils that we can see?
02:06 <Bruce> I would like to Activate my Bardic Lore.
02:07 <joo> Now that you mention it, Waldemar, something about this does tug at your memory. You can the eroded remains of carvings circling the structure, and some of them are written in the same characters as your songbook.
02:08 <Theo> Sparrow walks to the opening and peers inside it, pulling his hood back slightly for a better look but otherwise, stays silent.
02:10 <Bruce> My question is... who was entombed here?
02:14 <joo> Waldemar, you realise that this must be the tomb of an ancient King of Giants whom you've heard songs of. In the giant's tongue, he was called Owtheus. In the common tongue, he was apparently called Azetodeth, as you've learned. The giant's song speak of him reverently:
02:15 <joo> He was a wise and fierce king, learned in both war and sorcery, and brought about a golden age in Giant civilisation, conquering all other races. It is said that he took wives from many of the other races, including humans and elves, and that the mixing of his seed with lesser races diluted the power of the giants too much, and eventually led to their downfall.
02:16 <Theo> Called it!
02:16 <joo> You do not know how he ended up in a tomb in the middle of a swamp, however.
02:16 <Bruce> Oh god. He really is my Dad.
02:17 <Bruce> Owltheus: ih0.redbubble.net/image.30217065.9376/flat,800x800,070,f.u4.jpg
02:17 <joo> LOL
02:17 <joo> It's cannon.
02:18 <Bruce> Waldemar recounts the tale of Owtheus to his companions, but exercises restraint and doesn't sing it just yet.
02:18 <Vaylon> Hmm.
02:19 <joo> Ira listens to your tale intently, Waldemar. "Incredible! If this is true, it would explain some other writings I've seen here. Where did you learn of this?"
02:19 <Bruce> "A noble and prolific Giant, he was, but now his tomb, so corrupted! A shame."
02:20 <Vaylon> Hawthorn strokes his beard thoughtfully. "Owtheus. Interesting."
02:21 <Bruce> Waldemar pulls his old, crusty songbook from out of his things. "A memento from my father's adventures. A songbook written in the giants' tongue."
02:21 <joo> Sparrow, the interior is completely dark, but a musty, mossy smell emanates from within, and the sound of faint dripping.
02:23 <joo> Ira comes up next to you and leans over your arm to peer at the book, Waldemar. "There's more to you than I thought."
02:23 <Theo> Sparrow wrinkles his nose, "It smells of the dead in there." he mutters, sticking his head further inside.
02:24 <joo> Ira says, "If it's true that this Owtheus was a sorcerer, that might explain the power I felt within the tomb, and why its inhabitants are so restless."
02:25 <Vaylon> "I fear not the dead. We have come for a good purpose, and they will let us through."
02:25 <Bruce> Waldemar strokes his moustache. "You suspect the corruption comes from Owtheus himself?"
02:26 <joo> Ira shrugs. "Perhaps. But the seal on the tomb was not broken from within."
02:27 <Bruce> "Hrmm. Well, we won't learn anything else from without. Let us press onward."
02:28 <joo> She taps her staff on the ground. "But now I'm excited to see what is inside! We might be the last mortals to lay eyes on it, if we do this right."
02:28 <joo> Ira nods. "After you!"
02:28 <Vaylon> Nodding at Waldemar's words, Hawthorn walks to where Sparrow is. Awkwardly, he lifts the longsword that he's still carrying, and he begins to mutter a spell.

02:30 <Theo> Quietly, with his sword still drawn, Sparrow steps inside the tomb, keeping his stance low, but prepared for any unpleasantness.
02:31 <joo> You may roll Trap Expert, Sparrow.
02:32 <Theo> !r 2d6+2 (Trap Expert)
02:32 <PageBot> Theo: 10=6+2(+2) (Trap Expert)
02:32 <Theo> Rawr!
02:33 <joo> Hawthorn, your sword starts to glow, but then a chill suddenly runs through your body. A foul gust emanates from the tomb's mouth, and you feel a malevolent regard. Your magic disappears.
02:33 <Bruce> Meanwhile, Hawthorn made his light too bright and blinded h-
02:33 * Theo notes it would help if she actually had Sparrows sheet open, not Marishka's.
02:33 <Bruce> Oh.
02:33 <Bruce> Hahaha.
02:33 <joo> Hahaha.
02:33 <Vaylon> Wait, what?
02:33 <Vaylon> Like, all of it?
02:33 <joo> (To clarify: the rote Light disappears; the rest remains.)
02:34 <Vaylon> Oh.
02:34 <joo> "Careful, now," Ira says from behind you.
02:35 <joo> Sparrow, hold 3.
02:35 <Vaylon> Hawthorn frowns at his sword. "I'm afraid we will have to rely on torches for this."
02:35 <Vaylon> *I am
02:36 <joo> Note that Ira's staff provides a small circle of silvery light; but she seems to be keeping it subtle.
02:36 <Theo> Is there a trap here? If so, what activates it?
02:37 <joo> Let us see what you're going to do for light, if anything, first.
02:39 <Bruce> I whip out a torch and light up.
02:41 <joo> Mark of 1 adventuring gear. Your torch illuminates the inside of this passage, and you see that it slopes downwards into a central chamber. From the chamber, five other passages slope upwards and away in a star shape. The centre of the chamber is carved with arcane runes, but gaping with a massive crack in the stone.
02:41 <joo> Sparrow, there are no traps in the immediate area, but there might be some slight further ahead. I'll let you know.
02:41 <joo> *slightly
02:41 <joo> *off
02:42 <Bruce> Waldemar stands behind Sparrow with his Light. "Lead on, sir." He says, in a low voice.
02:43 <Theo> Sparrow scratches his chin as he looks at each passage, turning to Ira, "Can you read any of these runes?"
02:43 <joo> The crack lies across the floor, and leads down into further unknown darkness. There is a dusty spiral staircase seemingly carved into one massive body of stone, going down.
02:44 <joo> Ira says, "these are part of the spell sealing the tomb."
02:44 <Vaylon> Hawthorn takes a look at the runes with an interested "Hmm."
02:45 <Bruce> Waldemar scans over the passages. "Is this where the dead rest?"
02:45 <Theo> Sparrow nods, crouching to look at the crack, "Guess we follow this." he says simply, standing by the wall as he waits for his group.
02:46 <Bruce> After a moment, he adds: "Or walk around, or what have you."
02:48 <Vaylon> Can Hawthorn discern anything new from the runes?
02:48 <Vaylon> Or perhaps attempt to learn how the seal previously worked?
02:50 <joo> Hawthorn, you can discern realities, but your lack of arcane knowledge might limit the usefulness of what you can learn.
02:51 <joo> Ira says, "There are some tombs on this level, but this is really the entrance hall of the tomb... if it were intended to be entered." She chuckles. "This is were I was driven back last time, when they were all crawling out of this hole."
02:52 <joo> Ira says, "the seal does not protect this upper section; only what lies beneath."
02:53 <Bruce> Waldemar nods, and he follows behind Sparrow to get a better look at this Crack.
02:53 <Vaylon> I see...

02:53 <joo> Ask your questions.
02:53 <Vaylon> What happened here recently?
02:55 <joo> In the last year or so, this seal was broken, letting an unholy power within leak out. You can feel it, almost, with your senses tuned to the divine.
02:56 <joo> You cannot tell how the seal was broken, but you think it must have been something powerful.
02:56 <Bruce> Hawthorn uses a screwdriver to tune his senses to the arcane.
02:56 <joo> Hahah.
02:56 <Vaylon> Hmm.
02:57 <Vaylon> What should I be on the lookout for?
02:57 <joo> You should be on the lookout for the restless dead in the tomb, and for the possibility that the structure will collapse due to the damage.
02:58 <Vaylon> What here is not what it appears to be?
02:59 <joo> Nothing in your immediate surroundings deceives your senses: all is as it appears, for now.
02:59 <joo> Take +1 forward when acting on the answers.
03:00 <Vaylon> Very well.
03:01 <Vaylon> Onward!
03:02 <Bruce> Waldemar holds his torch over the crack in the floor. "Lead on, Sparrow. I'll be behind you -- I will be careful not to slip on the way down!"
03:02 <Vaylon> Hawthorn's robes make a quiet brushing noise as he hurries forwarad to keep up with the rest of them while still peering about the chamber in curiosity.
03:03 <joo> There's a small cubic chamber between the upper floor and the spiral stair case, and on each of its four walls is the carved face of a strange-looking humanoid.
03:03 <joo> (They're all four different faces.)
03:04 <Bruce> Disgusting. Owtheus was keeping track of the races he'd Sexually Conquered.
03:04 <joo> Hahaha.
03:04 <joo> [Headcannon] One of them is an Owl Head, and that's how he got his name.
03:05 <Bruce> Owtheus is giant for "owl-fucker".
03:05 <joo> A trickling and dripping of water, and the wet, musty smell from before, grow stronger as you descend the stairs. But, presently, Sparrow, you notice something amiss with one of the stairs.
03:05 <joo> Hahaha.
03:06 <joo> Sparrow, here is a stair that when stepped on will activate something.
03:07 <joo> When stepped on by a living being, that is.
03:07 <Bruce> (Sparrow says, "Ladies first!" and steps aside for Ira.)
03:07 <joo> Heh.
03:07 <joo> Presumably you know this from all those Tomb Raider books you read.
03:08 <Theo> Hehehe
03:09 <Theo> Sparrow holds a hand up in warning, "Tread carefully. There is a trap here. Skip this step." he says, pointing to the one in question as he steps over it.
03:09 <Theo> What will the step activate?
03:10 <Theo> (Super fun happy slide!)
03:10 <joo> It will release a tumble of rocks down the stairway, burying anyone within.
03:10 <Bruce> Hahaha. Yes, maybe it's a Good trap. Let's not jump to conclusions.
03:10 <Bruce> Oh god.
03:10 <Theo> I've just watched that Simpson's episode. I couldn't resist ^_^
03:10 <joo> Heh.
03:11 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says to Sparrow, "Can you stop it from working?"
03:11 <joo> Damn. I was hoping you'd forget about it when you were leaving, and I'd have a chortle.
03:11 <Bruce> Hahaha.
03:12 <Theo> Sparrow shrugs, "I can try."

03:12 <Theo> (Sparrow gets knocked out)
03:12 <Bruce> This is a precarious place to do some disarming, but I respect it.
03:14 <joo> Theo: you can choose between Danger or Cost.
03:14 <joo> (in this case)
03:15 <joo> The cost will be to use all of your adventuring gear to disarm the trap.
03:15 <joo> The danger: you'll find out when you Hack the job.
03:15 <Theo> Hmmm...
03:16 <Theo> I'll take one and lose my gear
03:16 <Bruce> (Sparrow: The only way I'm going to be able to disarm this thing is if I use five lanterns.)
03:16 <Theo> XD
03:16 <Vaylon> Haha.
03:17 <joo> Very well! The trap is firmly disconnected.
03:18 <joo> If you continue down the stairs, you see that it comes down into another cubic room with grotesque faces carved in the walls; but these faces are skeletal.
03:19 <joo> And beneath them are archways into a large open chamber with vaulted ceilings, held up by pillars that circle where you are.
03:19 <joo> The floor is flooded ankle deep in stinking water, and it drips down from cracks in the ceiling.
03:20 <joo> Presently, Hawthorn, you feel the malevolent regard from before stronger than ever.

03:26 <Bruce> Waldemar takes one of his many spare waterskins and hands it to Hawthorn.
03:26 <joo> That will be 1 ration, I think.
03:27 <Vaylon> Huh. All right.
03:27 <Vaylon> Presumably it already has water in it, then.
03:27 <joo> Did you expect something else?
03:27 <joo> Oh. Well, an empty one can probably be used without consuming rations.
03:27 <Vaylon> Maybe we had an empty one or something. I'd hate to use our limited resoures.
03:27 <Vaylon> Okay, then.
03:27 <joo> Yes, I think you have one or two floating around.
03:28 <Vaylon> Hawthorn takes the empty waterskin and fills it with nasty swamp water.

03:28 <Vaylon> Yes, that's right: through the magic of fire, one can turn undrinkable filth into potable water.
03:28 <joo> The water is now potable, and also probably harmful to the undead.
03:29 <Vaylon> Hawthorn mutters some words over the waterskin, and he nods to the others. "Let us proceed."
03:30 <joo> Ira holds up her cloak and levitates over the surface of the water, looking around shrewdly.
03:30 <Vaylon> Hmm, good thing it wasn't raining.
03:31 <joo> I don't think that would have made much of a difference, given that the ground above is already saturated.
03:31 <joo> In any case, water is indeed dripping down from the ceiling.
03:31 <Vaylon> I mean Ira might melt.
03:31 <joo> Oh. Hahaha.
03:32 <joo> By the way, you can see that Ira is wearing some frilly white knee-socks, and polished clogs.
03:32 * Vaylon squints at joo.
03:32 <Vaylon> There are four exits from this chamber, right?
03:32 <joo> Is ther a problem, m8?
03:33 <Vaylon> No, no, nothing.
03:34 <joo> There are four archways, but they all lead into the same massive chamber. It is at least wider than it is tall, so your torchlight does not extend to any walls.
03:34 <Vaylon> Hmm.
03:36 <Theo> I'm cooking at the moment so I'll be more delayed in my responses.
03:36 <joo> Ira points in a direction you would know to be North if you've managed to keep your sense of direction. "The foci of the enchantment converge here. I will need to go there to begin resealing."
03:37 <joo> She floats higher into the air, and allows the light from her staff to grow a bit brighter, searching ahead.
03:39 <Vaylon> Hmm.
03:39 <Vaylon> Hawthorn says to Waldemar, "I suspect the dead will not take kindly to any attempts to reseal the tomb. We should be ready to defend her."
03:41 <joo> "There's something here," she whispers back, and you can see her nudging at something slumped against one of the pillars with her staff.
03:42 <joo> The object heaves over, and you see that it's a white, bloated human corpse, wearing a shabby robe, its face wriggling with worms.
03:42 <Vaylon> Hawthorn sloshes forward through the water to inspect it.
03:43 <Vaylon> Gross!
03:43 <joo> Ira gasps and rises quickly away from it, and the corpse's head falls off and into the water, with a splash.
03:43 <joo> The splash echoes throughout the chamber, and a shuffling, creaking sound is suddenly heard coming from all corners.
03:44 <joo> A sound, almost like a death-rattle, rises above the rest, and a wind blows through the tomb, bringing the smell of old and new decay with it.
03:46 <Vaylon> Hawthorn is unmoved.
03:46 <joo> Just at the edge of your torchlight, you see skeletal figures standing in the water, surrounding you in a circle. The rattling voice turns into a moan, and then into an almost lyrical humming. A hollow rhythmic tapping is heard.
03:46 <Theo> Sparrow sighs, turning slowly, "Sounds like there's going to be a party soon and we're the uninvited guests."
03:47 <Vaylon> Hawthorn raises up the fire opal pendant and begins to chant as loudly as he can!

03:51 <Bruce> Sorry, old trolls. I'm in the middle of a Job Application.
03:51 <joo> The voice that was droning chokes and stops. The skeletons around you turn and flee into the darkness. You can hear the sounds of then climbing over each other and the walls.

03:53 <Vaylon> What's going on, Bruce?
03:54 <Bruce> I am finished now, but give me a moment to catch up.

03:56 <Bruce> I applied to be the Composer of an Independent Video Game.
03:57 <joo> Nice.
03:57 <Bruce> My chances are Slim, since my portfolio is Shite, but I still felt the need to shoot it off before doing anything else.
03:57 <Theo> Good luck!
03:58 <Bruce> Thank you.
03:58 <Bruce> On with the game! So, we're in a room filled with Fecal, and Hawthorn just scared off some skeletons?
03:58 <joo> Yes.
04:00 <Vaylon> Good luck, Bruce.
04:00 <Bruce> Waldemar draws the Blade of Grass, furrowing his brow. "Well done, sir." He says to Hawthorn.
04:02 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods to Waldemar, and he continues to pray and brandish the pendant, the red firelight keeping the shadows at bay.
04:02 <Bruce> What is Ira doing?
04:04 <joo> Ira hovers over what you can see to be a circular platform raised from the water, inscribed with runes that reflect her light. She says, "This is the place. I'll need to be undisturbed for-" But she is interrupted as a massive skeletal figure leaps onto the platform.
04:05 <Bruce> How high is this platform above the water?
04:05 <joo> It wears the tattered remains of what might have been a robe, and strung about its body is what looks like a massive drum, but torn and almost eroded but for its frame.
04:05 <joo> It's about chest-high if you're standing in front of it in the water.
04:06 <Bruce> Waldemar sprints forward and pulls himself on to the platform, and stands in defense of Ira!
04:07 <joo> The skeleton slaps the frame of the drum with one skeletal hand, and opens its bony jaws, letting out a horrifying screech that shakes the air. Dust starts falling from the ceiling above you three adventurers.
04:07 <Bruce> Oh my god.
04:07 <Bruce> How did he get that thing?
04:07 <Bruce> This skeleton can travel through dimensions.
04:07 <joo> Hahaha.
04:08 <Vaylon> D:
04:08 <joo> What will you all do? Waldemar, you'll need to defy Danger in some manner to avoid being harmed by a cascade of rock before you reach the platform.
04:09 <Vaylon> Is the Turn Undead not affecting this one?
04:09 <joo> It is.
04:10 <joo> Or it was.
04:10 <Bruce> He just turned 360 degreees, is all.
04:10 <joo> "On a 10+, you also momentarily daze intelligent undead and cause mindless undead to flee."
04:11 <Vaylon> Oh!
04:11 <Bruce> Waldemar braces himself as he moves, letting these pathetic rocks bounce off his muscles.
04:11 <joo> Indeed, Waldemar, you sense that this being is strong enough of will not be completely overcome by your magic; it is still held at a distance from you, however.
04:11 <joo> ...I mean Hawthorn.
04:12 <joo> I think I made a good run there.
04:12 <Bruce> Hahaha.
04:12 <Vaylon> Well, it's come to blows, now.
04:12 <joo> Defy Danger with CON, Waldemar.
04:12 <Vaylon> Hawthorn releases the magic of the turning, and he casts a spell to aid his bardic friend!
04:13 <joo> What will you do about the rocks?
04:13 <Vaylon> Oh, all of us need to do something about the rocks?
04:14 <Vaylon> Okay... Hmm.
04:14 <Bruce> joo, what was the stat Waldemar last chose to level up? It was during a period that is missing from my logs.
04:14 <joo> The cascade started in the centre of the chamber, so you it would affect anyone there unless they retreated up the stairs or out or otherwise evaded it.

04:25 <joo> I was wondering whether it should ignore armour.
04:25 <Vaylon> I mean, it's falling rocks. The archetypical party killer.
04:25 <joo> I think because of the nature of the damage, it does. Armour doesn't protect against a blunt impact of that size.

04:27 <Vaylon> That's fine.
04:27 <joo> Hawthorn, rocks tumble all around you, some of them bruising you. Moreover, a large chunk has fallen in your path, and you no longer have a clear way to the others. The human-sized skeletons from before have started to creep back.

04:32 <Theo> Fucking glaives!
04:32 <joo> Meanwhile, the other skeleton swings its glaive at Ira, who dodges backwards. She points her staff at it, and a silvery cobweb-like emanation floats out and wraps around the skeleton.
04:34 <joo> Waldemar, the skeleton standing on the platform hefts forth a mace that was hanging by its side, and charges at you.
04:35 <joo> Hawthorn, human-sized skeletons wielding spears and axes are coming at you from all sides.
04:35 <Bruce> Waldemar will hold out his sword to turn its mace strike, and then charge underneath the skeleton to strike at the drum-wielder's leg!
04:35 <Theo> Sparrow halts briefly and looks at the skeleton for a moment before letting out a scream and charging forward, sword at the ready.
04:35 <Vaylon> Hawthorn grasps the fire opal pendant and holds it aloft once more to keep these dead at bay!
04:36 <Bruce> This is Getting Scary.

06:06 <joo> There is one glaive-wielding skeleton that Sparrow is fighting and which Hawthorn burnt, and a second one coming up behind Hawthorn from the south.
06:07 <Vaylon> All right -- Hawthorn once more tries to fend them off by turning them.

06:08 <Vaylon> Hawthorn brandishes the fire opal and chants a prayer, though perhaps the time in this dark place is beginning to get to him.
06:10 <joo> The skeletons groan and pull back from your holy light, Hawthorn. Sparrow, if you remain near Hawthorn and don't attack the skeletons, you are also protected from them.
06:11 <Vaylon> Oh, wait.
06:11 <Vaylon> That should have been +4.
06:11 <joo> Why +4?
06:11 <PageBot> Why +bum?
06:11 <joo> Heh.

06:13 <joo> Hawthorn has 17 wisdom, doesn't he?
06:13 <Vaylon> ... Shieeeeeet.

06:14 <joo> Damn, really?
06:14 <joo> Well, I suppose you deserve it since I didn't notice.
06:14 <Vaylon> Well, I guess you should arrest me and take me to tabletop prison.
06:14 <joo> When the GM fucks up, you get a break.
06:14 <Bruce> Can you Describe the current situation?
06:17 <joo> Waldemar is standing north of the platform on which Ira is channelling a spell, having just exploded a giant skeleton. North of Waldemar, some lesser skeletons still remain. Sparrow and Hawthorn are south of Ira, with a blackened giant glaive skeleton, and south of them are two more giant skeletons and some smaller ones, currently held back by his holy symbol.
06:17 <joo> Waldemar has 13/23 HP, Sparrow has 13/20, and Hawthorn 18/21.
06:17 <joo> I mean Waldemar exploded the skeleton, not Ira.
06:18 <Vaylon> Heh.
06:18 <Theo> Sparrow stays near Hawthorn and starts edging back, "Let's try get to Waldemar and Ira."
06:18 <joo> Except for Ira, you're all standing in the stangant water that floods this chamber's floor, and it extends in all directions except North into darkness. To the North, some giant sarcophagi line the walls.
06:18 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods to Sparrow, and he clambers to his feet, walking with Sparrow back to the others.
06:19 <joo> Also North of the platform is what looks like an even larger sarcophagus submerged in water.
06:20 <Vaylon> Oh, dear.
06:20 <joo> The drum skeleton regards you, Hawthorn, and grinds its jaws together, then lets out a deathly screech set to disorient you and stop your magic.
06:21 <joo> What do you do?
06:21 <joo> And Waldemar, what will you do about the skeletons, which, though leaderless, seem to be gathering to attack you?
06:23 <Vaylon> Hawthorn focuses on praying, shutting his eyes and trying to block out the sound, raising his voice. He'll try to overcome this with willpower!

06:25 <joo> Nicely done, Hawthorn. Nobody can distract you from your meditation.
06:25 <joo> The drum skeleton instead intensifies its beat, and urges to the other skeletons forward as far as they will go to your holy light.

06:31 <joo> Meanwhile, the skeletons to the South start to circle around to the North, taking advantage of Waldemar's distraction.
06:31 <Vaylon> We're trying to make our way to the platform.
06:31 <joo> Oh, alright then.
06:31 <joo> You can do that without any trouble.
06:32 <joo> Ira still kneels, her brow furrowed in concentration, and sweating, focusing on her spell.

06:36 <joo> Waldemar, the blade of the gemmed broadsword swings in an arc and cuts true even through their bones. It's too bad they don't have any blood to spill.
06:37 <joo> You don't destroy any skeletons, but they are staggered backwards for a bit. You have a chance to retreat, or whatever else you wish.
06:37 <Bruce> I have 7 HP, correct?
06:37 <joo> 8 HP, by my count.
06:37 <joo> You have 1 armour, right?
06:37 <Bruce> Oh. I'll accept that.
06:37 <Bruce> Yes.
06:38 <Bruce> I will wait to see what my Friends do.
06:38 <joo> "Just a few more minutes," Ira says.
06:38 <Vaylon> Hmm... I think it's time.
06:39 <Bruce> Waldemar is nodding in respect towards the giant sarcophagus, knowing that Owtheus is waiting until the perfect moment to reveal himself.
06:39 <joo> If I wanted to troll you, I'd have had Ira say, "7.23 minutes."
06:39 <Vaylon> Hawthorn ends the prayer to repel the undead, and he turns to Waldemar, placing a hand firmly on his shoulder. He murmurs a low chant, grasping him.

06:42 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods to Waldemar and hurries back as quick as he can!
06:43 <Bruce> Waldemar presses the advantage as the skeletons stagger back -- he'll charge towards one or two of them and swing out with a mighty roar.
06:44 <joo> The two skeletone with glaives, who have circled North of the platform, stick their blades under the lid of the giant sarcophagus, and start to prize it open. Their glaives bend with the effort, and small bubbles rise from the water.
06:44 <joo> The drum skeleton is continuing its beat, urging the smaller skeletons towards Waldeamr.
06:45 <joo> Sparrow and Hawthorn together will be able to defend the platform from the lesser skeletons, if they use the height advantage.
06:46 <joo> Waldemar, you can roll Hack and Slash to engage two skeletons at once; but if it goes badly, you may find yourself surrounded[4~.
06:46 <Bruce> How many Skellingtons am I currently facing?
06:48 <joo> There are 8 skeletons in your immediate vicinity, Waldemar, in various states of repair from your earlier attack, and 7 more are not in reach of you, but are swarming around the platform and trying to climb onto it.
06:49 <Vaylon> What will Hawthorn have to do to defend it?
06:50 <Bruce> Hmm... Waldemar will remain in defense, then. He stands his ground, and fends off their attacks as best he can, spending his last hold to halve their damage.
06:50 <Bruce> He will try to hold them off until the sarcophagus is opened. Waldemar seeks an audience with the king.
06:50 <joo> If Hawthorn wanted to defend it alone, he could roll Defend or Turn Undead; if Sparrow also helped, no roll would be necessary, because you have the higher ground and sufficient number.
06:51 <Vaylon> Hawthorn holds his pendant aloft and and begins to chant. He fears no undead!

06:55 <joo> So you can.
06:56 <Bruce> When the Seal is finished, will Owtheus go back to being a fucking Corpse?
06:56 <joo> No, it only seals the contents of the tomb, not the contents of his Corpse.
06:56 <Bruce> I see.
06:56 <joo> Also, this isn't going to seal the tomb, quite. That would be quite the troll by Ira if it sealed you all inside.
06:57 <Bruce> Hahaha.

06:57 <joo> But, if he is sealed inside, it should have the same effect.

07:01 <Bruce> Well, what happens Next?
07:01 <joo> Hawthorn, you hold aloft your opal, and it shines like a red star. The skeletons surrounding you all flee for the third time in terror of its holiness. At the same time, the two skeletons opening the sarcophagus finally cause its lid to crack open, and a mass of bubbles and steam come forth.
07:03 <joo> The three remaining giant skeletons flinch away from the holy light, then, seeing a skeleton larger than any you've seen before rise out of the sarcophagus, they kneel in obeisance before it.
07:03 <joo> This skeleton appears to have been buried in a bed of gold coins, because they come spilling out, too, and as it stands it lifts up a immense sword.
07:04 <Vaylon> !
07:04 <Vaylon> I was just starting to wonder where the loot was.
07:04 <Bruce> Waldemar jumps back from the skeleton's he's been holding off, and he looks back to his companions. "I'll handle him. Try not to get involved!"
07:04 <Bruce> skeletons*
07:04 <joo> The skeleton wears a gold chain about its body, studded with rubies, and on its head is a gold circlet.
07:04 <Vaylon> Hah.
07:05 <Theo> "Oh fuck." is all Sparrow mutters when he sees the larger beast.
07:05 <joo> It leans down and peers at you all, and appears to demand something in the language of the giants, which sounds like rocks sliding against each other.
07:06 <Bruce> Waldemar calls out amidst the Carnage, in broken giant: "Owtheus! I am sent from the forest spirit."
07:06 <joo> The other skeletons slink away, perhaps hoping not to be noticed.
07:07 <joo> Owtheus regards you for a second, Waldemar, then says, in broken Common Speech, "Human. This will be your tomb."
07:08 <joo> Then a flame runs along the length of its great black sword, and it leaps at you, Waldemar.
07:08 <Vaylon> Really? Thanks!

07:14 <Bruce> What is her name, again?
07:14 <joo> The name she gave you is Dysus.
07:16 <Bruce> Waldemar stays cool. "Her name is Dysus, Your Grace, but she is too delicate to have joined us here." He takes the lock of Dysus' hair and offers it to one of the lesser skeletons, to be brought to him. "A token of her affection, Your Grace."
07:16 <Vaylon> Hawthorn looks in concern at Waldemar, though he still chants.
07:17 <joo> Waldemar, Dysus's voice comes into your head. "What do you speak of now, mortal?"
07:18 <Bruce> Waldemar forgot she was listening. "Ah, I am using a bit of Cunning to sway this old giant, my lady." He thinks, hella hardly. "All a trick, of course."

07:30 <joo> That ended up more like a Parley roll, but it doesn't matter.

07:45 <joo> What is the dowry that you ask for?
07:47 <Bruce> Waldemar thoughtfully advises he give her an artifact of personal significance to win her heart.
07:52 <joo> Owtheus considers this Proposition. He says, "I will a piece of my power into thy trust to deliver to my wife... if you act in like, and leave your weapons in my keeping until your return."
07:52 <joo> Owtheus takes the golden ruby-studded chain from his neck. "I speak of this."

08:13 <Vaylon> Hawthorn nods. "Seal the evil once more."
08:13 <joo> Ira closes her eyes and whispers. The runes glow faintly; then a rumbling emanates from the very ground you stand on, and cracks start to fuse together.
08:13 <joo> She opens her eyes again. "Oh... uh..."
08:13 <joo> "You should probably get out of here."
08:14 <joo> The rumbling intesifies, and parts of the tomb's exterior start to collapse.

08:17 <Theo> Sparrow leans against the tomb, still muttering. Occasional words heard are "Arsehole", "Sword." and "Payback."
08:17 <joo> Damn.
08:17 <Bruce> Hahaha.
08:18 <joo> This sounds like Bond material.
08:18 <Vaylon> Haha.
08:18 <joo> Did you learn something new and important about the world? Yes, probably.
08:18 <joo> Did you overcome a notable monster or enemy? Yes, I'd say so.
08:18 <Bruce> We learned about Owtheus' fetishes, and used them to our advantage.
08:19 <joo> Did you loot a memorable treasure? You should hope so, unless Owtheus counter-fucked you.
08:19 <joo> (It was actually a magical item that lets the owner teleport to it.)
08:19 <Bruce> That's still pretty Memorable.
08:19 <joo> Yes.
08:19 <joo> So you get at least 3 session XP each.
08:20 <joo> Now, who satisfied their alignment move?
08:20 <Theo> I think I did.
08:20 <Bruce> Hmm... I think I may have.
08:20 <joo> Yes, you certainly did infiltrate a location.
08:20 <joo> And, Hawthorn, I think you did heal someone, endangering yourself.
08:21 <Theo> I want to know what you had planned had I picked the Danger option.
08:21 <joo> And Waldemar satisfied his alignment move spectacularly, "Spur others to significant and unplanned decisive action."
08:21 <joo> Theo: I was Thinking Hardly of something appropriate to do in that case, and hoping you wouldn't choose it.
08:21 <Bruce> i should get 2 xp then,
08:22 <Theo> Hahaha!
08:22 <joo> However, an idea I had was that it would set off some other traps further down and make things more difficult.
08:22 <Bruce> cuz i fulfilled it hella hard
08:22 <Vaylon> Yes, I did.
08:22 <joo> Finally, are there any bonds to resolve or form?
08:22 <Vaylon> Yes, I have a bond I wish to resolve.
08:23 <Vaylon> I wish to resolve this bond: "Waldemar is a good person; I trust him implicitly."
08:23 <joo> Hahahaha.
08:23 <joo> I don't blame you, m8.
08:23 <Bruce> Waldemar as he realizes what his actions mean for his relationships with his friends: www.usasports360.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Tiger-Woods-drunk-566x526.jpg
08:25 <Vaylon> I will write this bond: "Waldemar is a cunning trickster. While I appreciate that, I will have to guide him toward using it for the greater good."
08:25 <Vaylon> *that aspect
08:26 <joo> Do you mean "while I appreciate that aspect," or "using that aspect for the greater good"?
08:27 <Vaylon> While I appreciate that aspect.
08:27 <joo> I see.
08:29 <joo> Do you agree, Bruce?
08:29 <Bruce> Yes.
08:29 <joo> Are there any further bonds? (Theo?)
08:29 <Theo> Not from me
08:30 <joo> Now I can finally say "Max XP" without it being a typo for "Mad XP."
08:30 <joo> But it's also Mad XP.
08:31 <Bruce> Quite the eventful Seshy.
08:31 <Vaylon> How many XP for me total? 7?
08:32 -!- Wren [~w@NewNet-B9B0E817.hsd1.va.comcast.net] has quit [Leaving]
08:32 <joo> If there are no more bonds, then Hawthorn gains 2+3+1+1=7 XP, Sparrow gains 1+3+1=5 XP, and Waldemar gains 1+3+1=5 XP.
08:32 <Vaylon> Hey, I can level up again.
08:32 <joo> That leaves them with 10/10, 14/10 and 6/10, respectively.

02:33 <Bruce> Meanwhile, Hawthorn made his light too bright and blinded h-

03:10 <Theo> I've just watched that Simpson's episode. I couldn't resist ^_^
03:10 <joo> Heh.

03:15 <joo> The cost will be to use all of your adventuring gear to disarm the trap.
03:15 <joo> The danger: you'll find out when you Hack the job.

03:48 <Vaylon> !r 2d6+3 Turn Undead!
03:48 <PageBot> Vaylon: 10=4+3(+3) Turn Undead!
03:48 <joo> Oohf.
03:49 <Vaylon> In a booming voice, Hawthorn proclaims, "Evil spirits, begone! A servant of the secret fire is here!"
03:51 <Bruce> Sorry, old trolls. I'm in the middle of a Job Application.
03:51 <joo> The voice that was droning chokes and stops. The skeletons around you turn and flee into the darkness. You can hear the sounds of then climbing over each other and the walls.
03:51 <joo> Are you doing it Live?
03:51 <joo> *of them
03:53 <Vaylon> What's going on, Bruce?
03:54 <Bruce> I am finished now, but give me a moment to catch up.
03:54 <joo> What job did you apply for?
04:15 <joo> 00:59 <Bruce> In that case, I will take... +1 CHA, and Eldritch Tones.

04:18 <Vaylon> Hawthorn tries to dodge of all the falling rocks and head toward Waldemar.
04:18 <joo> Waldemar, you wade towards the platform like a beast, weathering the tumble of rocks that rains on you; but this slows you down enough that by the time you've reached the platform, two more giant skeletons, in rusted chain armour and carrying glaives, approach the platform and flank the other skeleton on top of it.

04:24 <Vaylon> Does that ignore armor?
04:25 <joo> I was wondering whether it should ignore armour.
04:25 <Vaylon> I mean, it's falling rocks. The archetypical party killer.
04:25 <joo> I think because of the nature of the damage, it does. Armour doesn't protect against a blunt impact of that size.
04:25 <Bruce> This is what happens when you assume armor will save you from being crushed: thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/smashed-tin-can-16170793.jpg
04:26 <joo> Heh.
04:26 <joo> Of course, Hawthorn's armour is divine protection, but if it's in the same class, it must be ignored.
04:28 <Vaylon> Hawthorn, grasping his pendant, begins to mutter a blessing for Waldemar, first.

04:31 <joo> Sparrow, you dodge the falling rocks on your way towards the platform, but one of the giant glaive-wielding skeletons stands in your way. You will have to leap into melee combat with it.
04:37 <joo> Sparrow, considering your enemy has a weapon that greatly outranges yours, you'll need to somehow evade its attack if you want to get near enough.
04:37 <joo> It swings its glaive in an arc designed to cut you in half.

The skeleton cuffs you with a massive bony hand, knocking you to the ground, then raises its glaive two-handed, preparing to finish you off right there.
04:58 <Vaylon> Hmm.
04:58 <Bruce> Waldemar... sings an ancient, lively drinking song in the giants' tongue!
04:58 <Vaylon> Am I going to have to get around the bigger ones to reunite with everyone?
04:58 <Bruce> He will reach out to what little remains of the giants' former selves, and inspire them to dance and merriment!
04:59 <joo> No, it seems you'll be able to go between the fallen rock and the skeletons to the east or west. Your holy symbol will prevent them from approaching you, at least.
04:59 <joo> Hahaha.
05:00 <joo> Ira's skeleton disintegrates into a pile of bones, and she leaps down onto the platform. She kneels in the middle, her staff held before her, and starts chanting. The runes begin to glow.

05:10 <joo> Waldemar, your song echoes through the chamber with magnificent clarity. All of the skeletons turn to look at you for a moment, and it almost seems as if they will be swayed. However, a giant skeleton holding a pair of cymbals rises out of a sarcophagus in the distance, and lets out a deathly laugh.

06:05 <Theo> Oh was it a different skeleton? I misread that.
06:06 <joo> There is one glaive-wielding skeleton that Sparrow is fighting and which Hawthorn burnt, and a second one coming up behind Hawthorn from the south.
06:07 <Vaylon> All right -- Hawthorn once more tries to fend them off by turning them.

06:54 <Bruce> What is this floor bullshit, and what is the /7 for?
06:54 <joo> ...that was also a typo. I meant / 2.
06:54 <joo> floor(x) is the largest integer smaller than or equal to x.
06:54 <joo> Its effect is to round down the calculation.
06:55 <Bruce> I see.
06:55 <joo> So that's 6 damage, again.
06:55 <Bruce> I can take it, brah.
06:57 <Bruce> Just tell me when the Big Man is out.
06:57 <joo> But, if he is sealed inside, it should have the same effect.
06:58 <Bruce> Damm. Ira, could you slow down a bit? honestly its no rush

07:18 <Vaylon> Hahaha.
07:18 <joo> Hahaha.
07:19 <Bruce> That was not a [Lie], by the way.

07:30 <joo> That ended up more like a Parley roll, but it doesn't matter.

07:30 <Bruce> Parley is a little different.
07:31 <Bruce> Well, I guess you're right that it ended up requiring leverage on my part.

07:54 <Bruce> "That is sure to please her, Your Grace. I will abide by those terms, of course."

08:00 <Vaylon> Hawthorn offers up his longsword, placing it on the ground.
08:00 <joo> If you don't want to give up your weapons, I'm sure Owtheus wouldn't shun the company in the tomb.
08:01 <Bruce> Hahaha.
08:01 <joo> Or you could try to hide some weapons.
08:01 <Theo> Glaring at Waldemar, Sparrow throws his sword to the ground, keeping his dagger and single throwing knife hidden on him.

08:02 <joo> Fair enough, I suppose they're probably already hidden.
08:02 <Theo> Yup.

08:04 <joo> It's more than just a necklace, you should realise. The giant was wearing it like a sash.
08:05 <Bruce> But then he turns back towards the exit. "Back to Dysus, comrades." He says, with a very slight troll Smirk.
08:05 <Theo> Turning on his heel, Sparrow marches off, muttering under his breath and flexing his fingers.
08:05 <Bruce> damm, bro, ill buy u a new sword, lol.
08:06 <Theo> You better!
08:06 <Vaylon> Hawthorn walks off, a wrinkle of confusion on his brow.
08:06 <Theo> That was his Level 1 sword. His Pride & Joy.
08:06 <Vaylon> I can't believe Waldemar gave up the Blade of Grass!
08:06 <Bruce> Waldemar will show up at Dysus' trying to wear the chain as a belt without drawing any attention to himself, and tells Dysus they didn't get a dowry.
08:06 <Theo> He wants one studded with jewels now.
08:07 <Bruce> Waldemar has no loyalty to any God, Master, or Sword.
08:07 <Vaylon> Well, did we finish sealing him up, at least?
08:08 <Bruce> Let us see what Happens as we leave.
08:08 <joo> Hahaha.
08:09 <joo> You climb back up the spiral staircase and leave the tomb without incident. Ira wipes her brow, once you're outside in the cool night air again.
08:10 <Bruce> "Is it done?" Waldemar asks of her.
08:10 <joo> "You have some nerve volunteering us all for that," she says to Waldemar, "but thankfully I saved my staff." She takes the staff out of her hood and unfurls it.
08:10 <joo> Ira says. "No, not quite. This will be the interesting part."
08:10 <joo> Ira kneels before the runes that surround the crack you went into.
08:11 <joo> "I will now seal the tomb. This cannot be undone. Are you all sure of this?"
08:11 <Bruce> Waldemar chortles softly. "My apologies, but I could not let the opportunity pass."
08:11 <Bruce> Waldemar nods. "Let it be done, and let us be rid of this evil."
08:12 <joo> www.ourdigitalmemories.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/confirm-clear-iphone-history-picture2.jpg
08:14 <joo> +n
08:15 <Bruce> This is one way to seal it.
08:15 <Bruce> Waldemar bounces out!
08:15 <joo> From within the tomb, just before the crack closes completely, a horrific roar of anger can be heard.
08:15 <Vaylon> Hawthorn hikes up his robes and runs for the hills!
08:15 <Bruce> Come on bro, curse me, I dare u.
08:15 <Bruce> CALL THE FUCKING COPS
08:15 <joo> Flames spout from the opening in the last second, and then Ira flies out, just before the roof collapses.
08:16 <joo> Ira sighs. "I haven't cast a spell like that in a while. Let me have a quick healing potion."
08:17 <joo> She takes one out of her robes and quickly downs it.
08:17 <joo> I think we can call that a session.
08:17 <Bruce> Yes.
08:17 <joo> !missed-rolls
08:17 <PageBot> Missed rolls (estimated): Theo: 1 of 7, Vaylon: 2 of 12, Bruce: 1 of 10. Full list: <http://pastebin.com/XdtBXzHa>.
