I think it would be best if there were a single designated player (a "party leader") who decides what the party is doing at any given moment in order to speed up gameplay.
I've seen this done in other play-by-post campaigns -- it's pretty much necessary. Otherwise, things drag on for eons while you wait for other people to join in the posting. Party leaders help the game go faster. Obviously this doesn't apply to combat.
To make things really interesting, a vote could be held at the beginning of each session to determine who the leader is so that it's someone different each time.
I would prefer to have as few play-by-post sessions as possible, and instead to have longer IRC sessions, even if they're only once per week. Having the IRC sessions at a scheduled time would help immensely.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've mentioned it before in regards to the non-combat portions of irc sessions, but it seems it would be just as useful for PBP portions too.
At the moment, I'm intentionally delaying Solutare and Alder's side a little bit so as to allow for other factors to come together.
